I finished converting all the white on black diagrams for all of Fry’s books and made them black with transparent backgrounds. It looks much much better (for example, Steps to the Stars)
I also added floating chapter quick links so that you can get around the book chapters from anywhere on the page. This mostly helps mobile users where the pages can be really long.
I have also worked hard on optimizing the site by making sprites of all the large graphical elements and converting some to smaller GIFs. The slowest components are now the shopping cart (adds a second) and the nineteen other plugins that all add a few milliseconds to the load time. The next improvement is a faster host or more recent versions of Nginx and PHP. My goal is a two to three second loading time. Because of the way the caching and Nginx works, the more people visiting the site the better.
