DFDC has been negotiating with the WPA film library to see if a DVD can be made in order to make it available here. Part of the problem is that the footage is not worth anything given DFDC never sells any DVDs, but that doesn’t stop us, lol.
[Update June 8th, 2009] Negotiations with the WPA film library have failed. They wanted $32,000US, i.e. $40/second, for the rights to the DVD which is nuts. At DFDC’s current sales rate, it would take five thousand years to sell the thousand DVDs necessary just to cover the cost.
They also asked to have the clip taken down, sorry! We did however leave a few frame snaps up under the “Fair Use” laws.
From our negotiation, it sounds like Daniel actually signed over rights to the footage, likely for free, back in 1991. He no doubt wanted to have the footage available for future generations, which ironically it is, but now locked behind copyright laws.
