An entry on Daniel’s wikipedia entry lead to more information about NICAP’s “Policy on Contact Claims”
I’ve been watching the history page of Wikipedia to see what changes anybody makes, if any, and one individual added information from a book by a guy named Peebles, which mentions that Daniel failed a polygraph test on television. (Curtis Peebles, 1994. “Watch the Skies! A Chronicle of the Flying Saucer Myth” Smithsonian Institution. ISBN 1-56098-343-4 Pg 104.)
The book was available at the local library and the quote referenced is certainly there on page 104, although it is just a single line “Daniel Fry failed a lie detector test” and nothing more. For the complete story, DFDC has many more details.
The book, however, did hold details about a letter sent by NICAP to eight contactees, Adamski, Angelucci, Bethurum, Fry, Menger, van Tassel and Nelson, entitled the “Policy on Contact Claims”. NICAP’s policy was a nine-point challenge: (page 132)
- Would they submit their evidence to NICAP?
- A request for any photographic negatives.
- The names, addresses, and notarized statements of any witnesses.
- Would the contactee sign a notarized statement that all his claims were true?
- Would the contactee take a lie-detector test?
- Would the contactee agree to appear publicly before a NICAP-sponsored panel?
- If point 6 was not possible, would the contactee either appear before a private NICAP meeting or answer on tape a list of NICAP questions under oath?
- If the contactee had been called a fraud or hoaxer, had the contactee filed a lawsuit or libel?
- Any further comments and/or suggestions?
To summarize Daniel’s reponse, recorded in Understanding, he said he never made any claims, and that he had published all his evidence in two books available at the time, WSI and TMOE. Daniel didn’t have any photographic evidence, nor witnesses to the event and didn’t think the panel would be objective, hence appearing before it was pointless.
As Daniel pointed out in his article, he was a founding member of NICAP, but later, from Peebles book, we learn that when NICAP found out, they rescinded his membership.
