“To avoid evil is not enough: the wise man avoids, also, the appearance of evil.”

If every statesman, politician, and military leader in Washington had been required to memorize the above quoted proverb, the United States might have led the Free World to victory in the ‘cold war’ several years ago. Instead, we are rapidly instilling fear in the hearts of our friends and confidence in the hearts of our foes.

It is not our course of action which is so rapidly alienating us from friendly, as well as neutral nations. The fault lies in the careless and frequently arrogant manner in which we express our intentions. Many of our statesmen, and most of our military leaders seem never to give any consideration to the effect which their words will have upon the minds of the common people, as well as the leaders of other nations.

Too many of our public officials appear to have forgotten that the public exists, except at election time of course, when they must come to that public to be retained in office. Between elections, however, they come into contact only with lobbies, pressure groups, officials of other nations and officials of our great corporations. They hear only the demands which emanate from concentrations of power and authority. They lose sight of the fact that these demands are made by the individuals or groups who invariably have ‘axes to grind,’ and that their demands may be diametrically opposed to the will and welfare of the great majority of the people. They seem to forget also, that it is the will and determination of the general public which will, in the final analysis, determine the future course of humanity upon this planet.

As we pointed out in a previous editorial, Theodore Roosevelt defined the proper procedure in our present position very precisely when he said, “In times of tension we must speak softly, and carry a big stick.”

The big stick we are now carrying will create respect in our enemies, but we must begin to speak more softly if we hope to maintain the respect of our friends.

The exclamation, “Well, I’ll be jiggered,” that came from the mouth of aeroplane Captain Matthew Van Windkle, as his craft flew over the Atlantic, last Sunday, was surely that of an extremely pious man.

For who but the pious would have limited themselves to such an expression when in front of them was a flying saucer?

To avoid the saucer, Capt. Van Windkle took evasive action which took the stomachs of his passengers into their mouths and flung some of them to the floor.

At a San Juan (Puerto Rico) airport the Captain reported the saucer as a “burning, greenish-white round object unrecognizable but definitely not a meteor.”

What powered the “object” he couldn’t guess at.

In that conclusion Capt. Van Windkle is no further away from discovery than any other person who has ever seen a flying saucer.

Is it jet propulsion, centrifugal force or could it be someone outside the Western World is using some power of which we know nothing? It’s possible-don’t let’s say it’s feasible, in the fantastic set up of present reported flying saucer happenings-that there is a link in the writings of John Toland, whose book “Ships in the Sky” (Henry Holt R. Co., New York) has just been published.

For in “Ships in the Sky” is described the odd doings of one, Mad man, Dr. Solomon Andrews, an American, who, in 1862, wanted to fly a gas-filled dirigible without motors of any sort against the wind! Now the year 1862 was not a time for fooling about in America. The Civil War was on, and rebel general Stonewall Jackson was only a few miles away from Washington.

So that. when the “lunatic from New Jersey” tried to approach President Abraham Lincoln with an idea for winning the war he found even the log cabin doors shat in his face.

Plan had been trying all sorts of aerial jiggerypook since the ‘Mont Golfier brothers sent up the first balloon on June 5, 1783. What the world wanted was a powered, gas-filled dirigible that could be steered. Frenchman Giffard had produced a 104 foot long, cigar-shaped gas bag driven by a steam engine.

It could do only six and a half miles an hour, so any decent breeze could send it the other way, and then there were the sparks from the fires; so that was out.

Lincoln steered Madman Solomon off to the Bureau of Topographical Engineers; he had no time for cranks.

The bureau threw out a diversionary defensive movement, and concentrated on the war.

But not before one of the members had listened fascinated to Solomon describe the flying machine that was going to save the North-particularly his description of what the machine was powered by.

“You say it will fly against the wind, Dr. Andrews,” he said. “What motive power will you use?”

Andrews leaned slightly forward: “Gravitation,” he answered evenly. That was the end of it.  The man was obviously mad.

So away went Dr. Andrews with his tail between his legs.

Two days later his spirit was at bubbling point again. He would, he said, build the aircraft himself, and present it to Mr. Lincoln. That would show him.

Seamstresses from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, made the gas cylinders from 1,200 yards of Irish linen.

John Wise, noted balloonist, intersected them with cells of cambric muslin.

They filled the cells with hydrogen.

About the end of May, 1863, the dirigible stood, no motors anywhere, on Perth Amboy Common, tugging at the hundreds of mooring ropes encircling the cylinders.

Dr. Andrews climbed into the under slung basket. The ropes were cut.

UP shot the doctor and away he went–first with the wind, then making a circle against it.

The Perth Amboy yokels were stunned. The doctor was just happy.   He cavorted about among the clouds, and “buzzed” the crowd below while they fell to their stomachs in terror.

Then he coasted to a gentle landing.

From there came the old familiar story. Not even “seeing” was believing.

Up and down, backwards and forwards, the doctor went; brushed off by politicians, cold shouldered by experts.

But they couldn’t put him off. To him that aircraft was more than meat and drink.

He even sent his craft up on its own, letting it float, as he had set the controls, at “dizzy” speeds faster than a railroad car.

Those who saw it were speechless.

It was again effort wasted, although this time the doctor did see the President.

“Go home, Mr. Andrews,” said Mr. Lincoln, “and request four or five respectable persons to write to me on what they saw. Then I will take action on it.”

The doctor did just that. But he heard no more.

So he flew over New York, scattering souvenir cards while the neck craning crowds cluttered traffic, men became entangled in women’s hoop skirts, people shouted incredulously, and horses neighed in terror.

The doctor and Mr. C. M. Plumb, who was in the basket as ballast, waved to those on the rooftops, and grinned contently as people were carried off injured and in fainting fits.

It was a gallant effort, but really, after his experience the doctor should have known better; for he was still battering his head against the brick wall.

Sadly he wrote what he thought were details of his gravitational force in a letter.

A bank slump following the Civil War cut off his finances.

To keep body and soul together he took again his old job with the Board of Health at Perth Amboy.

And when he died and they opened his letter no one could understand his description of how he had harnessed gravitation to propel an object horizontally.

From that day no other man has been able to fly without a motor. That is, of course, unless someone, somewhere, without telling us of the Western World, has rediscovered Dr. Andrew’s secret…

And tagged on to it jet propulsion … thus producing flying saucers. Makes you cogitate, doesn’t it… ?

Because it could be dashed, deuced awkward if it be true.

The mind of man is a vast reservoir of unanswered questions. Somewhere in the mind of each of us is a seed of hope that perhaps “if” we hit upon just the right key, we may open the door and bring forth some of the answers.

How many times have we been bombarded with the Bible quotation ‘…the works that I do shall ye do also; and greater works than these shall ye do;…” (John 14; 13). Immediately our imagination is flooded with visions of untold wonders. And just as quickly we say to ourselves “That sounds wonderful, BUT how do I know that I can do it,” or “1 wonder if I could.”

Many of us believe this statement of our beloved Jesus the Christ to be a fundamental TRUTH, a truth that anyone can experience, and that thousands of people are experiencing every day. Magazines, books and conversation are rife with evidence that great numbers of persons are putting this truth into practice and are experiencing pre-cognition, clairaudience, psychokinesis, extra sensory perception, and the greatest promise of all, Healing.

Extra Sensory perception has been painstakingly proven by Dr. Joseph B. Rhine and the staff at Duke University, by experiments carried out under extremely rigid scientific controls in the Laboratory. Most important of all, Dr. Rhine has shown that certain theories are acceptable to the general public if properly presented.

The Research Department of Great Western University is built on the assumption that this TRUTH has been proven, and is again formulating an extensive experiment into these Parapsychological fields.

About February 15, 1959, a group of the University faculty and students will leave on an expedition for the purpose of archaeological-religious observations in the Lacandones areas along the Usumacinta River valley and adjacent highlands in the lower part of Mexico. The Lacandones are said to be a most religious people with extensive religious rituals. The customs, rituals, and dances of these natives will be photographed and recorded for the purpose of making a motion picture.

The aforementioned experiment will be carried on concurrent with this activity. This proposed experiment will involve an important additional step to the already proven mass of evidence. It will seek to show that the ability that exists in all of us, and has been experienced to some degree by many, can be improved by training and practice. It will also seek to determine the most effective methods of sending and receiving thought transmissions.

To give greater significance to the final information gathered, a scientifically minded group of persons are needed to participate in this experiment. GWU is inviting you to be en the State-side team. A little time and effort is all that is required.

Here is an opportunity for all readers of Understanding magazine to aid in this important research and perhaps prove to yourself and others that “I really can do it.”

If you are sincerely interested in helping to develop these mental and spiritual tools, complete information regarding your activity in this experiment can be obtained by writing to GREAT WESTERN UNIVERSITY, CORRESPONDENCE DIVISION, Suite 1-777, 630 Mason Street, San Francisco 2, California. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Chapter Six EXPLANATIONS We have spoken of our educational system and some of the forms of manufacture that we undertake, although we refer to this as creative-ness rather than a system of manufacture. Those who have talent are creative even as you are creators in your own right and our peoples according to their inclination and their ability find delight in producing these articles of their own creative design and artistic ability. There is a form of friendly competition among the various centers in that. attempts are made to create something a little more attractive or of better design than his neighbor, but this is done in a friendly manner and understood by all concerned.

We have stated in one interview that we would tell you of our operations in the electronic field insofar as we utilize such forces for our daily use. In order to do this, and because we do not cover this particular field of creation and activity under the heading of electronics, we will use such terms as can be understood by you. On your plane, for instance, you have erected large distributing centers, which are usually on the bank of a river or dam site wherein the waters are directed through huge turbines producing electrical power necessary to operate your factories, light your homes and other media which utilize electricity. This is a costly operation and also a bulky one, and while it may be a marvel in engineering as to the erection of such distributing centers, we have a much simpler operation, for we do not rely upon water or air power to generate energy, such energy being already in existence.

We have referred to this as Odic Force. You may think it quite absurd in that you use a force called electricity, yet cannot understand its source or what it is. Do not think thus, for this same Odic Force that we use is controlled to the extent that we can direct its energies along any given line of activity, yet like yourselves we cannot explain lust `what it is.’ Investigations and research by our top scientists reveal that it does emanate from a central or Solar force field and can be activated or transmuted into a power which we direct into the channels necessary for our use, but the substance thereof seems to be immanent in Cosmos itself. It is Omnipresent if you will. It is everywhere. it penetrates and interpenetrates not only your earth and our solar system but all other planes which we have investigated. However, your scientists will eventually discover how to utilize this force. It is strongest at night after the solar rays have diminished. The concentration of the Solar Light rays during the hours of daylight seem to have the effect of storage; the magnetic field surrounding your plane intensifying the power. Of itself it is harmless. It sustains all life and light, dispenses warmth and increases all things which grow, also magnifies and can be termed that substance in which we all move, live, breathe and have our being; we are submerged in this universal essence. From it and out of it are all things formed and sustained. It is the GREAT MYSTERY intriguing investigators on any plane.

Now visualize or imagine, if you will, a city something like your own, but of course different in aspect in that the streets are wider, and the homes, while not uniform as are many of your own, are of distinctive coloring, of intricate design and most attractive looking. These are the individual homes, and, as we have explained in an earlier contact, are designed and erected according to the environmental problems relative to that plane which we inhabit.

But the populace, generally, of this planet GATO live much like ,yourselves, that is: in communities. The houses are spread out, not congested as your own, so such communities are beautiful to look upon. The homes are for the most part, constructed of beautiful grained stone something like your granite except that the coloring is much more attractive, reflecting contrasting and harmonizing rays, depending upon the angle of the solar forces. Each Center (we do not call them cities, but shall use the term as you understand it) radiates outward from a hub wherein the administration offices are situated. The streets are laid out like a huge spider web. and intermediate channels or avenues branching through completing geocentric circles from the center outward to the periphery. make an unique design.

Connected with the administration buildings (your more modern designed dwellings being developed along similar lines, your architects receiving inspiration from our designers, many of them reborn from the earlier Atlantean period) is the central power plant, although this is not more than twenty-five by thirty feet, your measurement, having a tower or antenna reaching up quite high into the atmosphere. This is composed of certain metals in combinations of blends, the interior holding variations of coils and elements which draw from Cosmos this LIGHT FORCE RAY or Odic force, the interior machinery transmuting this to power or energy which is distributed throughout the length and breadth of the area. The huge coils are something like your copper coils used in heating, but of course are not copper, only look like it. This is the same substance of which many of our space craft are constructed. It can withstand tremendous heat, and is a natural conductor of many electronic forces. The arrangement sets up a counter current of magnetism, which increases or intensifies the odic force by an inter-play of light energies acting upon sensitized plates proving gyroscopic action.

This force in conjunction with the gyroscopic action produces an equilibrium enabling space craft to maintain perfect balance in flight regardless of speed or change of direction, the momentum of the gyroscopic discs determining actual speed, which is practically unlimited. As speed increases details of craft are merged into a light pattern varying in color until its vibration extend beyond the limits of ordinary sight, sort of becoming invisible. The action could be called `ELECTRIC-MAGNETIC-GYROSCOPIC.’

This force itself is harmless. It sustains all life. It is Light. It dispenses warmth, activates growth. This we have said and now repeat so that you will at least investigate it and attempt its utilization. Such power or force is distributed, each dwelling having its own reception instrument which is controlled by use of a multi-use panel. This instrument utilizes a tube something like your cathode, but of far greater sensitivity, and this picks up this force, so that by the manipulation of certain rheostats it is directed to that section of the home wherein it is needed, as, for instance, lighting or heating. Any part of the dwelling can be lit or heated. We use no lamps or wires, stove, range or furnace such as you, although we do have an instrument which could be likened to an electric range for the purpose of cooking such items of food as necessitate heat treatment.

For conveyances that operate on our avenues imagine, if you will, a machine something like your automobile. The operator simply touches a button on the panel and the vehicle housed inside a garage will pass through the door, which opens, and stops outside the entrance to the domicile. The owner then enters, presses another button on the panel of the carrier and the vehicle then moves forward. The speed can he determined by a control, and guidance by same manipulation if the operator wishes to study something whilst in motion or simply talk with passengers. Here a device similar to your photo-cell is used. So you can see even your modern automobile with its push button controls is getting near to perfection. The difference is that most of our carriers are capable of highway travel as well as air and under water or upon it. Eventfully you will produce machine having some of these principles. Anyway with our craft as long as the power is on, motion can be perpetual or at least until the machinery wears out. There is a switch which controls a form of disengaging clutch enabling the vehicle to come to a stop without shutting off power. As we have a system of one way traffic, this only becomes necessary when reaching destination or in stopping to pick up passengers. Imagine what a boon such a craft would be to your peoples-no gasoline producing fumes putrefying the atmosphere. But it will be some time before such vehicles can be available on your earth plane.

But those of you who eventually arrive at this plane of existence and experience will be able to enjoy all the privileges that we ourselves now have. There is, of course, much more detail we might be able to give regarding various equipment that we use. But we are speaking to a group of ordinary citizens who lack technical understanding, and this is not our particular function. If it becomes necessary to address a group of your technicians then we should employ the services of one of our own experts in the field, that he might describe the construction and operation of our instruments more thoroughly. This will come about if and when it is felt that you are ready for such information and instruction, and we can be assured that it will be utilized’ in a constructive manner.

We are somewhat like yourselves in respect to many of our instruments. We use and operate them. We know their purpose and what they can do, but insofar as fully understanding the complexities of the mechanisms operating such instruments, it is beyond our comprehension. Strange, some of you think. But how many of you, for instance, understand the intricate mechanisms of your telephone? You pick up your receiver and dial a number and you expect to be connected with that number. Can any of you explain what happens? We thought not. Even the automobile you drive is actually a mystery to most operators.

No, we are merely explaining some of the conditions pertaining to our life in order that these interviews may be more interesting and to give you some idea of the differences, which, in the main, are not too diverse or beyond your understanding. Our main reason for such contacts is to make ourselves known to you and to prepare those wining to co-operate for the New Age experiences which have to be faced if you would become part of that future civilization.

We now come to another phase of your mission. There have been several events taking place on your plane which have caused comment and consternation in the minds of those concerned. One item in particular which has baffled your authorities is that related to a land somewhat to the west of you, HAWAII, from whence it is reported that many planes have disappeared during the past two months. Perhaps we can explain something of this and why it is so, allowing perhaps for three incidences wherein planes unavoidably flew into the path of one of the radio-active vortices spoken of earlier-wherein such planes were immediately disintegrated–the pieces being scattered over a wide area of your ocean Pacific and, except perhaps for a small part found floating, nothing would be discovered.

Week by week, there are innumerable changes that occur to accelerate our progress in the development of interplanetary travel. As out’ progress continues we encounter more and more obstacles, such as distance versus speed.

With the present method of utilizing liquid fuel to propel a rocket, operating on the law of action-reaction, through space, our progress finds a limit, that of inefficiency in the distance versus speed problem. The speed of light, for instance, is generally regarded, at least at our present level of technology, as the absolute maximum. There are strong theories that hold this speed can never be approached and certainly never passed, as well as theories which adamantly claim it can.

186,000 miles per second is mighty fast, taking only one-seventh of a second to circumnavigate the equator. At the speed of light it would take little more than a second to reach the moon, and only eight minutes to the sun, and the outer limits of the solar system less than the time a modern airliner needs to fly from New York City to Miami. When we consider that at this speed it would take 100,000 years to traverse the Milky Way Galaxy and two billion years to the nearest Galaxy to ours, the speed of light seems less staggering. The speed of light, or 670,000,000 miles per hour, could take us far in our exploration of space, but the obstacle-, encountered would be illimitable from our present viewpoint.

For an object, like a spaceship, to travel into infinite space from the Earth it would have to achieve “escape velocity,” which for the Earth is 25,020 miles per hour. We, with our multi-stage rockets, have been able to throw a satellite into orbit which at 500 miles altitude, is 16,929 miles per hour, required velocity.

To achieve an ideal means of space travel many people have ;come up with innumerable ideas. The satellites now in orbit are stepping stones into outer space, and will relay space data to the Earth that will be invaluable to our progress of manned space flight to the moon which, at our present rate, may be accomplished in the next couple of years. Teen-alters all over the country are now space-conscious, and many rocket clubs have been organized by them. Teen-alters have formulated workable ideas on rocket trajectories, space instrumentation from robots to rockets, and have used them in their own experimentation. What inconceivable force is driving man to go into that velvety blackness sprinkled with iridescent diamonds that we so lightly term space? Somewhere in that immense ocean is life, like a seed, planted in the harvest of the heavens. So scientists say. But then there are those that hold the theory that we are but returning from where we have come.

Then the UFO have given many people the reason to believe that life exists elsewhere in the universe, and has gone so far as to give some people the incentive to consider radical propulsion sources for space-craft. Maybe traveling by electro-magnetic fields will not seem so fantastic in the future, and we may someday visit our brothers in the skies.

The translucent canopy over our heads has now given man the curiosity to attempt the inaugural jump into the depths of the unknown, to leave the safety of his house, and venture into forgotten worlds. He will pierce the infinite depths of space, and disturb the spoils of time. intrepid, he will reach across the universe, but at what price if he will not reach across a shorter distance to grasp his brother’s hand in Understanding?

SYDNEY, Australia-Three young Americans have arrived here to spend the next seven months living with Australian farming families in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, according to the Australian News and Information Bureau.

The Americans, who belonged to the 4-H Junior Farmer Club of America, were visiting Australia under the International Farm Youth Exchange Plan, the Radio Australian correspondent said. Their visit coincided with the tenth anniversary of the plan, started in 1948 to develop better understanding among the farm youth of the world. It has now spread to fifty countries.

Munich, Bavaria

Dear Mr. Fry,

As an enthusiastic and serious UFO-Investigator, who is writing a book reference of your “Steps to the Stars” for the “UFO-Nachrichten” of Mr. Veit, Wiesbaden-Schierstein, Western Germany, I should he very much interested in your Journal “Understanding.” Please send it to me regularly. Also back numbers are very welcome to me. I know all four books and almost all of the other saucerers-as the Reeves’ have baptized them.

I also had a few UFO-sightings all in the direction of the Great Dipper. Their way of Flying was horizontal and their color was much more red, as the light of the surrounding stars of the Great Dipper. In other directions of the sky, I never have seen any Saucer or vimana.

I have enclosed a one Dollar-banknote and an international post-certificate.

With the greatest interest I am waiting for your next book, announced on page 83 of your “Steps to the Stars.”

With many thanks and the best saucer-greetings

truly yours

(Dr. Hermann Buhler)

Fundamentally related to all the great issues dealt with in our anniversary edition is the question of peace.

Deep, strong, and remarkably united are humanity’s aspirations for peace. But its thinking about peace leaves much to be desired. And since thought precedes and produces action, we should be giving more attention to clear, constructive and peaceful thinking.

First of all, what kind of peace do we seek? An absence of human strife? Yes. But. is that enough? The Hungarians didn’t think so. In 14

the end few men, who have even tasted freedom will settle for the “peace” of a dungeon. The goal is peace with freedom, justice and opportunity,

Plainly there are some prices we cannot pay for peace. But there are prices we can and should pay. Ignorance, prejudice, fear, hate, greed-these are imperative sacrifices. Few of us have yet paid all we can in this coin.

What instruments shall we use in the pursuit of peace? We are much concerned these days with weapons, military and material weapons. In the present stage of human thought they are required for defense. They represent deterrent power. But this must be used in the manner of a policeman’s power.

Let us recognize the limitations of such weapons. They do not make either war or peace; it is the thought directing them which does that. Real disarmament begins with aims, not arms. Weapons may help to maintain order and check tyranny; they cannot create the positive essence of peace found in harmony and amity. For that we must rely on spiritual weapons-truth, reason, enlightenment, compassion, brotherhood. Will not this kind of offense ultimately prove the best defense” Too much of the world is hoping for peace but expecting war-thinking, perhaps unconsciously, toward war. Positive peace thinking will reject this mesmeric fatalism. Peace-makers realize that their work will proceed most naturally and effectively where it spreads outward from a sound core.

Mutual understanding and helpfulness, obedience to law, peaceable adjustment of differences must be developed first in the family, the school, the industry, the community, the nation, and among trustworthy, liberty-loving like-minded nations before they will take effect in the wider neighborliness required for world peace. Like charity, this peacemaking begins at home and affords the individual daily opportunity. If he cares enough about peace, nothing will stop him praying for it, thinking toward it, working for it.

One kind of work for peace is expressed in organizations. This can be useful at every level. But it should be more often remembered that organizations provide only machinery. The motive power must come from the nations and individuals involved. The spirit animating them will determine results.

Indeed, the indispensable ingredient is the individual imbued with true brotherhood, derived from spiritual understanding of God’s Fatherhood. In the measure that his tribe increases genuine peace will be won.

The supreme prayer of my heart is not to be learned, rich, powerful or good, but simply to be radiant. I desire to radiate health, cheerful-ness, calm courage, and goodwill.

I wish to live without hate, whim, jealousy, envy, fear. I wish to be simple, honest, frank, natural, clean in mind and clean in body, un-affected-to say “I do not know,” if it be so, and to meet all men on an absolute equality-to face any obstacle and meet every difficulty un-abashed and unafraid.

I wish others to live their lives, too-up to their highest, fullest, and best. To that end I pray that I may never meddle, interfere, dictate, give advice that is not wanted, or assist when my services are not needed. If I can help people, I’ll do it by giving them a chance to help themselves; and if I can uplift or inspire, let it be by example, inference, and suggestion, rather than by injection and dictation. That is to say, I DESIRE TO BE RADIANT-TO RADIATE LIFE.

Everyone has heard the saying, “The Lord helps him who helps himself,” but how many have heard the remainder of the proverb? It should read: “The Lord helps him who helps himself, and he best helps himself, who helps his neighbor.”

Reprint from the Prince George Cosmic Observer.

We all agree, I think, that we should strive for understanding and unity, yet in a world where Ego rules this is impossible of attainment. When ego enters the room Reason jumps out of the window. None of us are blameless in this regard. We must achieve Understanding and Unity on a world wide scale if the human race is to survive. To achieve this we must ALL start with ourselves.

Understanding consists of the ability to suppress the Ego and to place oneself in the other fellow’s position. It then manifests in what we call extreme tolerance. Unity exists where two or more people are traveling toward a common goal together, working together at all times, yet respecting the other person’s rights to his own opinions and actions.

Harry and Bonaro Overstreet, in their book, “The Mind Goes Forth,” have this to say, and I recommend that all who read this ponder it deeply: “The importance of changing our mental image from winning or losing to that of understanding or misunderstanding can scarcely be overestimated. it may well be the very thing on which the survival of the race depends. Certainly it is that upon which a multitude of human relationships depend; for if we began to feel as embarrassed about misunderstanding another person as we now feel about having him prove us weak or mistaken, the whole focus of our pride would change.”

In my last Editorial I emphasized the need for not rejecting any-thing while we are engaged in research.. Nor does it much matter where you begin your research for TRUTH, because after all, you can measure a circle beginning anywhere.

Research, to be of value, must be accompanied by a skepticism of a kind, but it MUST be accompanied by an understanding of the other fellow’s viewpoint, otherwise TRUTH AN-ill remain hidden. You or I will not arrive at the TRUTH of any matter if each of us insists on referring to the other one as a “crackpot or a nut.” So, therefore, if You do not wish to pursue the mystic or spiritual angle of Flying Saucers, please, for your own sake at least, do not call us “nuts.” Let us, all of us who are engaged in Flying Saucer research, join together in UNITY and UNDERSTANDING, and if the rest of the world insists on calling us all “nuts” let us at least be, as the advertisements say, “nuts of distinction.”

One of the principal purposes, both of this magazine and of the Understanding groups which it serves, is to promote a better understanding among all of the peoples of earth. It is obvious that in order to accomplish this task your editors must have available to them. a large and continuing supply of facts, opinions, and viewpoints from people of every race and nation. Before a magazine can disseminate under-standing concerning world problems, its editor must be able to achieve that understanding, and in order to do this the cooperation of the reader is absolutely essential.

Several times in the past, we have requested our readers to send in letters giving their opinions concerning current world problems. To date we have received very few. We do receive many letters containing opinions concerning the format and contents of the magazine, most of which are favorable, but we receive very few of the personal viewpoints concerning world problems, which would rake the magazine a much larger and more effective publication.

At the present time copies of this magazine are going to people in twenty six different countries. If all of these people would send in letters giving their honest opinion (whatever it might be) concerning one of the present world problems, dangers, or opportunities, this magazine could become one of the most interesting and helpful publications in its field.

Remember that this is your magazine and no matter how much time and effort and money we spend upon it, it is you, the reader, who will ultimately determine whether it will succeed or fail.

We take this opportunity to implore you once again to send in your opinions concerning world problems and current world events. V6 ‘e may not be able to answer your letters at once (we are far behind in our correspondence) but we will print the letter if it is at all possible.

In October Vista Unit of Understanding had as their speaker, Rein-hold Schmidt of Kearney, Nebraska, who spoke to a very interested audience. Carr, Inventor of the OTCXI Spaceship, who also heads OTC Enterprises of Baltimore, Maryland, will be speaking in California during the month of November for most of the Flying Saucer Groups and for others. They have just finished a lecture tour of the Central and Northern States and will return to Washington and Baltimore by way of the Southern States.

Ric Williamson, whose speaking engagements have been delayed because of the maritime strike in England, will return to this country soon and will lecture in the Eastern and Central States during November and December. He will be available for the West Coast in January and February. If you have not yet arranged for his lecture to your group please write to the Secretary of Understanding, Rm. 35, 101 S. Lexington, El Monte, California, as soon as possible. There are still some dates available.

The desert project of Understanding is proceeding slowly (mostly due to lack of finances.) The cabin is being wired for electricity and the Power Company promises to string the poles by the middle of November. The weather at this time of year is ideal for a desert weekend. Those who wish to take advantage of the smog less atmosphere and the peace and quiet may reserve the building for a few days by writing to the Secretary of Understanding. Again we wish to thank all of the people, members of Understanding and others, who are helping to make this center possible through contributions of time, money and materials. There is still much interior work and materials needed. We will keep you posted on the progress.

As an advance Christmas thought: How about subscriptions to Understanding for all your friends? This will be one present which they can enjoy all year. We will be happy to send your Gift Subscription with a lovely greeting card enclosed. If you wish to order books as gifts please specify so that they may be gift wrapped with a card enclosed.
