VOLUME VII AUGUST, 1962 NUMBER
8
Dedicated to the propagation
of a better understanding among all the peoples of the earth, and of those who
are not of earth.

A Continuation of "Understanding the Road to Peace"
The United States, in cooperation with a few of the other
free nations, has the opportunity to achieve complete victory in the cold war
within the next twelve months. We have had other opportunities on at least two
other occasions within the last six years, but have fumbled the ball at the
critical moment, because we were not sufficiently aware, at the time, of the
precise pattern of events, and of the opportunities which it offered.
Today, the United States has the most potent cold war
weapon that has ever been possessed by any nation. A large food surplus, and
the ready ability to create an even larger amount, at a time when hunger is
stalking Communist nations and most of their satellites. This weapon, however,
is of no value unless it is used, and so far we have been dangerously slow in
bringing it into action.
On March 5th of this year the Kremlin released a news
report concerning a speech given by Khruschchev to the Communist party Central
Committee meeting. In the speech, Khruschchev admitted openly that virtually
every one of the farm programs in the Soviet Union, including his personally
sponsored Virgin lands project, had failed even to approach the goals set for
them.
2 UNDERSTANDING
He reported that there was a severe shortage of
protein foods, principally meat and dairy products, and that some means would
have to be found to increase the supply.
Two days later, Castro announced that the already vanishingly
small rations of meat and dairy products in Cuba would be cut almost in half.
In Red China, at the present, time, there are about 35
million persons who are starving to death. About ten million of these will die
no matter what is done from now on. The remaining 25 million will probably die
unless the United States furnishes them with food.
When this fact is mentioned, the reply of some people
in this country is, "Let them starve; it serves them right for being
Communists." They tend to forget that the Chinese who are starving are not
Communists, have never been Communists, and have not the slightest desire to
become Communists. They are a people who have long been friendly toward the United
States, and would like nothing better than to continue that friendship.
Because they were ignored by us in their time of need,
they were taken over by the Communists and are being used by them for their own
purposes.
Nevertheless, if we do not feed the starving Chinese
we will, sooner or later, have to fight them, and it will probably be very
soon. The dictators of Red China have on their hands millions of still
reasonably able bodied men, whom they cannot feed. It is not likely that the
dictators will simply sit back and allow those millions of men to die of
starvation when they could just as well use them in a military venture.
Viet Nam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia have no defenses
which could possibly hold out against the onslaught of several million men, no
matter how poorly armed and supplied the army might be. There would be no need
to worry about logistics, no supply lines, since there is nothing to supply.
There would be no need to consider casualty rates, since all of the men are
doomed if they stay in their own country. They would simply be assembled on the
borders of the countries to be taken, told that their only food was ahead of
them, and to go and take it.
A relatively small, but trained and supplied, army
could follow behind to mop up and consolidate the gains. Anyone who has studied
AUGUST, 1962 3
the true history of the Korean "Police Action"
knows that similar tactics by the Red Chinese almost succeeded in overwhelming
a large, well trained, well supplied and well dug in army, which lad at its
command modern weapons and superior air and sea power. There are no such armies
in Viet Nam, Laos, Thailand or Cambodia. Only the United States stands between
Red China and an easy conquest of these countries, and our aid, as on several
occasions in the past, may well prove to be too little and too late.
News wires, in the last few days, have carried stories
of the large military buildup on the Chinese mainland opposite the islands of Quemoy
and Matsu.
Speculation is rife as to whether this buildup is for
the purpose of launching an attack upon these islands and perhaps Formosa, or
whether it is simply a defensive buildup for the purpose of repulsing an
anticipated attack by Chiang Kai-Shek upon the mainland. No one seems to have
considered the possibility that the action may be intended primarily as a
diversionary tactic to draw United States sea and air power away from Thailand.
If so, the tactic seems to be succeeding.
Your editor does not pretend to be wise enough to
advise our government as to whether it should feed the Chinese or fight them;
he merely wishes to point out that we will probably have to do one or the
other.
There is no possibility of winning the cold war by
fighting the Chinese, since it will then be a hot war, but there is an
excellent probability of winning the cold war by feeding the victims of our
enemies, if it is done in the proper manner.

(Harmony Grove, California, June 30-July 1,
1962)
They came, several hundred per day, on June 30th and July 1st
to tree-shaded Harmony Grove, outside of Escondido, Calif. They came to expand
their awareness and understanding of Man and the Cosmos in which he dwells.
They came to share, from the platform and in small groups, the findings of
their studies and experiences. They came to meet old friends and to make new
ones. And, they came not in vain.
4 UNDERSTANDING
The meetings were opened by the singing of the Great
Invocation, for which Mrs. Albert G. Rose (Vista #4) had written the music.
Then followed a beautifully delivered spiritual tribute, by Scott Brownell (Elsinore
#38) to Frank Spiva whose earthly efforts to promote man's spiritual growth had
been terminated two weeks earlier.
The Speaker's Program was headed by our beloved Dr.
Daniel W. Fry, whose appearance, until we saw his beaming face, had been
problematical. (He must surely have a saucer in the hills to make his frequent
trips between Merlin and Southern California!) Once again, with basic
simplicity, Dan presented us with thought-provoking aspects of truth.
Of speakers there were many, three or four each
session, morning, afternoon and evening. The subjects covered were as varied as
the persons represented. Borderland Research had Riley Crabb, Joe Sloan,
Vivienne Day and Zipporah Dobbins ; Aetherius had George King; Synthesis, Lenore
Cook; and Brotherhood of Man, Margo Sylvester. Among the pioneers were Kelvin
Rowe, Dana Howard, Michael X and Orfeo Angelucci, and among the newcomers,
Grace Hess, Robert Zarvell and Dr. Gerald Light. Not to be omitted was the
performance by Bob Beck of fragrance, music and moving colored lights. A full,
enlightening and interesting program for all!
The success of the Understandorama is due to the
ground work of directors-Robert Crichton #4, Scott Brownell #38 and Michael X,
plus their many unnamed assistants. Credit is also due the many speakers who
came "to give" with no hope of compensation, even for their personal
expenses.
It might also be noted that at. the many tables set up
to distribute free literature and sell books the sale of Love, Understanding
and Brotherhood by far outweighed the sales of printed books. Even the local
press, who contacted the "table tenders" and then Dan Fry, were
motivated to give the convention many favorable reports.
They came seeking and giving, and they left happy with
the togetherness they found.

Can Twins Read Each Other's Minds?
By Jhan and June Robbins
(From This Week Magazine, Jan. 28,
1962)
Can
twins read each other's minds?
Yes, reports a Canadian psychologist who has carried
out the first scientific study of this tantalizing question. And his findings
are confirmed by This Week readers!
Science is heading for an important new break-through
in the exciting field of extra-sensory perception. The new discoveries being
made have to do with twins-especially identical twins. Dr. Robert Sommer,
psychologist at the University of Alberta, in Canada, has just carried out the
first series of systematic field interviews ever undertaken on the intriguing
mystery of twin telepathy. His studies confirm a fact long suspected by
parapsychologists: identical twins, and to a lesser extent, fraternal
twins-report unusual ability to communicate with one another through
ESP-extrasensory perception.
Can mass experiments with twins bring out the
still-locked secrets of how ESP operates? Dr. Sommer and his associates,
British psychiatrist Dr. Humphry Osmond and research assistant Lucille Paucyr,
believe there is an excellent chance. Here, in an exclusive This Week report,
is the exciting story contained in Dr. Sommer's just-published scientific
report on twins and ESP.
"The greatest need in ESP research," Dr.
Sommer told us, "is to find suitable men and women for psychic
experiments. Although nearly everyone has a certain amount, of telepathic or
clairvoyant power, it has become evident that some people are much better at it
than others. The problem is, how to spot them and get, them into the
laboratory.
"One thing we have learned is that two people who
share an emotional closeness are more likely to report more successful ESP
experiences than two strangers.
UNDERSTANDING 6
"Identical twins obviously share the closest
possible relationship that can embrace two human beings. They actually started
out as a single individual-and they have the same mental and physical
attributes."
Accordingly, Dr. Sommer and his associates contacted
twins in the city of Saskatoon, Sask., who were willing to participate in the
experiments. There were 35 of them-18 men and 17 women. There were 14 pairs of
twins and seven twins where only one of a pair was available. Their ages ranged
from 16 to 50. They agreed to submit to a 27-item interview which was
scientifically designed to reveal psychic talents among them. The results:
One-third of the twins interviewed reported paranormal experiences with their
"other halves." These twins tended to be the ones who had always
shared strong mutual interests and similar abilities.
Twins who scored high in ESP demonstrated a great
awareness of each other. Here are some kinds of inter-twin perception from Dr.
Sommer's report:
1. Telepathic knowledge of a twin's thoughts.
One twin mentioned he could see other places through his twin's eyes:
"When my twin goes out, I can imagine what he is doing and see the place,
even if I've never been there or heard it described."
2. Sensing the presence of a twin. One pair of
boys reported that this aspect of ESP ability gave them a unique advantage on
the playing field. Explained one brother: "It's especially good in fast-moving
games like basketball and hockey. I never have to look around to find out where
my twin is - I always know!"
3. Complete identification with an absent twin.
A twin who is living many miles apart from her sister told the scientists:
"Once I woke up feeling very blue and depressed. I couldn't, imagine why.
Then my sister telephoned from Ontario to tell me she was in serious
trouble."
One of the twins who said she sometimes became
confused about her own identity reported, "When my sister and I were
children we each had a Teddy bear. Often when my sister was carrying her bear,
I got the feeling I was carrying mine, even though I could see my hands were
empty."
The Canada-based researchers are the first to
undertake a full
AUGUST, 1962 7
scientific field study of a phenomenon that has long
amazed the families and friends of twins. Recently, for example, a pair of
lively 13-year-olds in Jackson, Miss., have been making headlines because of
their apparent ability to communicate with one another without speaking a word.
They are Sherry and Terry Young. They amuse their friends, puzzle their parents
and often exasperate their teachers with their telepathic tricks.
Other twins have reported startling experiences with
telepathy and clairvoyance. When we published a series of articles in This
Week on extra-sensory perception, thousands of letters came to us, many
from twins who told dramatic stories of ESP in operation. We interviewed
letter-writers and cross-checked their stories with relatives, neighbors, and
corroborating witnesses. Here are some examples: The mother of Barry and Gary,
15-year-old twins in upper New York state, told about the time she took Barry
to a hospital for a minor surgical operation. Gary stayed at home with his
father.
His parents testified, "At. the moment that Barry
was operated on, Gary clutched the exact spot on his anatomy where the surgical
incision, was made on his brother. He groaned, turned pale and wept. Then he
began to perspire and to breathe regularly and heavily as though under
ether."
Last summer at a camp in Vermont., one twin went off
with her two tent mates and a counselor to canoe across a small stretch of calm
lake. The other twin, lounging on her bunk, suddenly experienced a startling
sensation of terror and was unable to catch her breath.
"Susie's drowning!" she exclaimed. She
dashed to the water's edge, jumped into a rowboat with an outboard motor and
tore off in the direction her sister had taken. She found the canoe party
clinging to the overturned vessel. Her sister was safe but had been caught for
a moment under the capsized canoe.
A New Hampshire woman, now 55 years old, wrote us that
she and her twin sister were part of a family of 12 children but they were the
only ones who were close. "Once Marge and I went on a picnic
together," she said. "She ran ahead of me. I couldn't see her. Suddenly
I felt a sharp pain in my ankle. I couldn't imagine
8 UNDERSTANDING
why. Then I saw Marge lying on the ground, moaning. A
boulder had crushed her foot."
In Milwaukee a pair of 11-year-old twins entered a
contest and won a single ticket to a baseball game. They settled the issue by a
flip of a coin. The winner went off to the game. The loser, sulking at home,
began to mow the lawn. Suddenly he came back into the house sobbing with pain.
"I guess the mower threw up a stone," he
told his mother. "Something hit me on the collar bone. It hurts."
Examination showed no mark on the boy's chest but he
continued to say he was in pain. Two hours later his brother came home. He had
his arm in a sling.
"I jumped up to catch a foul ball," he
explained. "I missed it and it hit me on the collar bone."
The father of 16-year-old twin girls in Indiana wrote
us about the "sixth-sense qualities" of his daughters. Once they had
decided to go to a local carnival on alternate nights. On the night Della went,
Stella was at home leaning over the ironing board, annoyed because she had
burned her hand with the iron.
Suddenly she felt a "cold cloud" of terror
descend on her. It was followed swiftly by a feeling of dizziness and nausea.
She put aside her iron and walked rapidly to the fair grounds. There she
learned that the Ferris wheel was stalled. Her sister, frightened and motion
sick, was swaying back and forth in the top-most car. When Della got down
safely, two hours later, she flung her arms around Stella and exclaimed, You burned
yourself again! Won't you ever learn how to iron?

AUGUST, 1962 9
In testing extra-sensory perception with the Rhine
Cards symbols are conveyed between the agent and recipient when a telepathic
function occurs. In many cases involving telepathy the recipient experiences an
image that duplicates, or partially duplicates the correct response. If we
postulate a physical mechanism and medium for the process it fails to explain
all cases where the process has occurred at a frequency beyond probability or
chance.
Analysis reveals that for energy in the form of
communication to be transferred from one terminal to another involves space and
time. Yet communication terminals in telepathy, agent and recipient, are not
limited by distance and the communication is apparently instantaneous. Similar
behavior occurs in telekinesis. Thought, therefore, seems to act independently
of space/time barriers and is not dependent on physical energy to communicate
it.
To admit the existence of telepathy, and to control
its operation are two different things. It is difficult to determine what
factors most favorably influence psi. The ability to apprehend graphic images,
a receptive attitude, and certain emotional patterns are some factors. There
seem to be other biological, physical, and psychological factors that need
exploration. If mankind awakens this dormant psi power, there will be many
changes and many wonders.

Throughout the world there are various areas where the
pull of gravity "leans" to a certain extent. A man can stand on one
of these mystery spots or vortices and feel that he is standing erect, yet to an
observer he will appear to be leaning somewhat. Then if he stands so that he
appears to be perfectly erect, he feels as if he were leaning.
One such place is the House of Mystery at the Oregon
Vortex near Gold Hill, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Cooper, who bought it in 1960,
don't claim that it's the only spot of its kind in the world, but they do feel
that the gravitational deviation there is more pronounced
10 UNDERSTANDING
than at most other mystery spots. They believe theirs is
one of the three most pronounced in the world. (With the other two at Booganville,
Indonesia and under the Great Pyramid in Egypt, the three are believed to be
equidistant from each other.) They say, for instance, that the Oregon Vortex
has 11 Terralines while the Mystery Spot at Santa Cruz, Calif., another such
place, has only seven. I have visited the Santa Cruz mystery spot and would be
willing to go along with that statement.
The Indians were the first to notice the Gold Hill
Vortex. They referred to it as forbidden ground. The first white man to notice
it was William McCullough, Cooper says. It was first opened to the public for
viewing by John Litster in 1930. According to Cooper, the Oregon Vortex is not
the only place in southern Oregon where gravity leans. There are several
others, including two in the Siskiyous, he states.
These vortices are electro-magnetic fields of force, spherical
in shape, where the gravitational pull leans to one degree or another. In the
case of the Oregon Vortex, it leans by about 7½ degrees. In other words, if one
wanted to draw a perfectly level horizontal line inside one of these vortices,
he would have to draw it at a slant.
Mr. and Mrs. Cooper bought the House of Mystery
property from the family of the original developer of the vortex for public
viewing, John Litster. According to Cooper, Litster was definitely
"on" to something before he died a few years ago-something possibly
in the realm of free energy.
Dan Fry has expressed interest in conducting
experiments with a perpetual motion machine within the vortex area sometime in
the near future. (The vortex is only about 25 miles from Merlin.) A thought to
consider along these lines: If there is a vortex under the great pyramid in Egypt,
it may well have a bearing on the great powers attributed to that monument.
Perhaps experiments at the Oregon Vortex will aid in exploring some of marvels
of the pyramid. At the entrance to the Oregon Vortex is a sign that perhaps
best sets the mood for a visit to this area. It's a statement by Charles F.
Kettering, once a vice president of General Motors. It reads: "We know
practically nothing about anything."
-Cleve Twitchell

AUGUST, 1962 11

The effect of the variation in gravitational pull at the
Oregon Vortex is demonstrated in these two photos. Notice how, as the boy and
girl trade places, the boy seems to grow a little and the girl shrink a little.

If you stand in
what you think is a straight position in the House of Mystery, you appear to be
leaning a little. If you stand so that you appear to be erect, you feel off
balance. Notice how this girl appears to be leaning slightly to the right in
comparison with the straight up and down pole behind her. The house itself is
on a slope, so disregard the slanting doorway. The pole through the doorway is
the actual straight. up and down marker.

BUENOS AIRES, MAY 25-(AP)-An Argentine Navy Committee
of Inquiry is to be sent to the seaport of Bahia Blanca south of Buenos Aires
to investigate reports of "Flying Saucers" sighted over the town
recently, it was announced today.
Rear-Admiral Eladio Vasquez, Commander of Belgano Navy
Base near Bahia Blanca, said that. he had himself seen a strange glowing object
over the area last Monday. The "Flying Saucer" was reportedly seen by
many people and was said to have hovered "suspended in space" for
several minutes.
The local newspaper, La Nueva Provincia, published two
photographs of the mysterious unidentified object. The pictures have also
appeared in the Buenos Aires Press.
Among other reports of "Flying Saucers" was
one from Cordoba where a glowing object was seen in the sky although the object
disappeared more quickly than at Bahia Blanca.
One rumor had it that the objects came from a
"Flying Saucer Base somewhere on the American Continent."
——— ♦ ———
Unidentified flying objects have been sighted in
southern Oregon again. A few months ago Understanding magazine carried a story do
the compilation of 37 sighting reports made by Carroll Watson of Shady Cove,
Ore. Watson now has informed us of the details of sighting number 38.
The latest sighting was made at 7:35 p. m. March 24, 1962, by Harvey Hansberger, who lives in the northern foothills of Sams Valley, Ore.
Here's Watson's report
"The back door of the Hansberger home faces
north, and young Hansberger was standing in the door opening and enjoying the
balmy moonlight night. Suddenly from the northeast and going in a straight line
towards the southwest there appeared a lighted, oblong object traveling at an
estimated height of 400 feet and speed of 600 miles an hour. During the
approximate two seconds of observation, Harvey was able to determine the
following: The light was of a
AUGUST, 1962 13
clear pure white luminescence. Although there was no sharp
outline of the object, Harvey- definitely observed, centered on top, a rounded
raised protrusion. The overall length seemed to be a minimum of 30 feet and the
height 12 feet.
"There was absolutely no sound. The moon situated
high in the sky at the back of the observer, was three days past full moon. The
air temperature was around 60 degrees F. The light intermittent wind was moving
westward at about 15 m.p.h. The only clouds were the occasional strata cumulus,
very high in the sky. There was no variation in the object's color, speed or
direction. It stayed in a level position.
"Harvey stated that he believed flying saucers existed
but until he saw this object, he had not paid much attention to the subject. He
now `knew' that he had seen one-something that did not fit any of the general
`explanations' of UFOs."

AUGUST, 1962 15
Science has determined that everything in existence is
mind substance at various degrees of vibration. Even the solid objects are
vibrating at such a slow rate that this movement is invisible to the physical
eye. The ultimate goal of mankind is to raise his vibrations to the point that
he is transformed into a new creature, with power to come and go as the wind,
making himself invisible at will. (See John 3:8)
The scriptures hold the key to this attainment.
However, they are generally misunderstood and, in most cases, assumed to be
beyond the understanding of the average man. This may have been true in the
past, but in the New Age the truths these scriptures hold are being opened to
man's understanding, giving him the key to LIFE ETERNAL, NOW.
The problem is: how to raise one's vibrations. This
can be accomplished by prayer and praise. In fact the word `praise' is a
contraction of the` two words `prayer' and `raise.' The Psalmist said,
"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise;
be thankful unto him and bless his name." Ps. 100:4.
In the human concept, it is not considered ideal to
desire praise, therefore the average man reasons that it is not. necessary to
praise God; for God being ideal would not desire praise. This is only partially
true. God being ideal does not need nor desire praise, true. It is man that
benefit from obeying this command. Man, by being grateful and thankful for his
opportunity to express life, and for the power and dominion which God has given
him over his life, increases his vibrations, and by so doing, he will
eventually transmute himself into the 4th dimension. His body is spiritualized
by praise, whether he realizes it or not. Note, that the word `praise' contains
the word `raise,' and one's vibrations are raised by prayer. As gratitude is
allowed to flow forth from his heart in a continual stream of thanksgiving, the
mind substance from which the body is formed is transmuted into a higher
vibration. Through prayer, which is desire to give attention and thanks to the
Omnipotent Creator within you, and praise for His Omnipresent LIFE, TRUTH and
LOVE, the body vibrations are raised to a higher frequency,
16 UNDERSTANDING
dissolving all things unlike Him. The Him being the
"Christ in you, your hope of glory."
The mind of Christ has no conception of any negation
whatsoever. It is the awakened mind, which is coordinated in every respect.
"Awake and arise from the dead (the living dead) and Christ shall give
thee life." How can man awaken this great Christ light within him, and
raise his vibrations to the ILLUMINED REALM? The answer is through praise. We
praise God when we praise the good in others. You praise God when you silently
turn within giving thanks for all things, the bad as well as the good: the good
for the joy it brings, the bad for the opportunity it gives you to overcome
adverse conditions, thus promoting your spiritual growth. Be thankful for the
chance you now have, while living in the flesh, to purify and perfect your body
temple. "What house will ye build me, saith the Lord; What is the place of
my rest?" It is not a building or brick and stone that God desires us to
build, but "the temple not made with hands," the physical body,
purified, transmuted and redeemed. WAKE UP THE GOD IN YOU AND LIVE, and learn
HOW TO THINK TO LIVE FOREVER.

When the collective array of Infinite Love and
Intelligence is assembled within my Soul as witness to that. which has been
overcome, Divine Wisdom and Understanding supports and directs my Soul, and it
is filled to overflowing with Divine Love.
Then I am united as one with Divine Infinite Intelligent
Love and I am, I AM eternally.

Understanding Convention
A report on the Understandorama convention at Harmony
Grove last month is scheduled to appear elsewhere in this issue. It might be
added, however, that the convention received excellent publicity from San Diego
newspapers. Copies of the write-ups following the convention, received by the
editors of Understanding, showed a pleasing sincerity and straightforwardness
on the part of the reporters who wrote them. A particularly fine article was
written by Jamie Bryson of the San Diego Union concerning Dan Fry's
experiences,
Visitors at Merlin
Visitors have been pouring into Merlin, Ore., during
the spring and summer. Among them were Edna Basmajian, circulation manager

of our magazine, and her husband John; Mr. and Mrs.
Benjamin Schiavo of El Monte, Calif., Unit #1, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Dachner,
former leaders of San Francisco, Calif., Unit #11, who moved to Oroville,
Calif., earlier this year.
"White Sands Incident" Reprinted
The new combined edition of Dan Fry's "White
Sands Incident" and "Alan's Message to Men of Earth" has been
reprinted. The original reissue of the two books under one cover, printed in
1960, has sold out. But the new books are now off the press and ready for
distribution.
Notes From "Voice Universal"
The June-July-August 1962 issue of "Voice
Universal" contains a notice from an organization in India appealing for
old books and magazines. We suggest sending old copies of Understanding and any
other publication readers may have around the house. Send them to S. R. Narain Deva,
Deva's Reading Room, Holy Gate, Etah, U. P., India.
The current issue of "Voice Universal" also
includes a nice letter to-the-editor from Paul Weast, president of Buffalo, N.Y.,
Unit #37.
News of Other Units
INGLEWOOD, Calif., Unit #15 entertained Dr. Gina Cerminara,
noted author, lecturer and researcher in the field of reincarnation, June 30 in
a talk on "Reincarnation and What It Can Mean to You." The unit is
taking a rest during July and August.
ELSINORE, Calif., Unit #38 heard a talk by Dan Fry
during June on "What's New in the UFO Movement Today?" Earlier in the
year, Arthur J. Burks spoke on "Reflections From the Great Mirror."
Col. Burks actually addressed the unit on three different occasions, all of
which were well attended.
GETTYSBURG, South Dakota, Unit #53 reported two
changes in officers. Olin Goets has been elected vice president and Marilyn
Goetz, secretary, succeeding Victor and Elvera Aldinger, who have moved to Idaho.
Regular meetings are being held twice a month. The unit's main project at
present is buying books for the purpose of lending them to interested persons.
