VOLUME VII SEPTEMBER, 1962 NUMBER
9
Dedicated to the propagation
of a better understanding among all the peoples of the earth, and of those who
are not of earth.

"Propaganda" is a term often used but not often
understood. Many individuals unconsciously use it to describe an opinion with
which they do not agree. For instance, statements made by Russians with which
Americans do not agree are labeled "communist propaganda," and
American statements with which Russians do not agree are labeled
"capitalist propaganda."
Some time ago an organization known as the Institute for
Propaganda Analysis clarified the subject by issuing a list of seven propaganda
devices. It is particularly interesting to study this list with respect to
various statements that are frequently made about or in opposition to New Age
ideas.
Here they are:
1. Name Calling-call your opponent an objectionable name
(such as "crackpot, cultist, fanatic, extremist, pinko," etc.)
2. Glittering Generalities-make sweeping claims for or
against something (Such as "There is no such thing as a flying
saucer.")
3. Transfer Device-attempt to identify your cause with
something or someone highly respectable or honored. (Some examples: the little
ditty "How do I know? The Bible tells me so," or in a converse way
"There's nothing in the Bible about reincarnation.")
2 UNDERSTANDING
4. Testimonials-get respected or well known people to
speak out on your side. (This is a device so common that, it needs no examples.
We all use it, and unfortunately we are forced to use it continually in order
to impress people with the merits of whatever cause we are promoting.')
5. Plain Folks-approach your subject from the "common
man's" point of view; decry "experts" and "outsiders."
(This is a device of which, unfortunately, individuals in the New Age field are
sometimes guilty, especially when opposing such things as fluoridation of water
supplies and usage of additives and preservatives in foods. It really isn't
necessary to ridicule experts who support such measures, because for every
expert in favor of them there usually is an equally prominent expert who
opposes them.)
6. Card Stacking-use half truths or innuendos that are difficult
to refute without a lot of detail and documentation. (A well known example of
this one is the "When are you going to stop beating your wife?"
story. The charge is so ridiculous to the person at which it is directed that
he ignores it, but repeated often enough, it convinces the neighborhood that he
actually is beating his wife. Other examples are the questions sometimes hurled
at flying saucer contactees "How many cocktails had you consumed before
you saw this spaceship?"; the question "Why is your organization
falling apart?" asked the leader of an organization that is prospering, or
"Why aren't you happy? " when asked of a person who is perfectly
happy. In the case of the latter question, the individual of whom it is asked
usually looks unhappy at that precise moment because he or she finds the person
asking the question annoying!
7. Bandwagon Technique-let it be known that
"Everyone's on our side." (Examples: "Nobody believes in that
sort of thing," or "If I pull out, the whole organization will fold
up.")
When we study this list and reflect upon the statements
that influence the people of earth in their decisions, we are forced to the
conclusion that about 90 per cent of all arguments used fit these definitions
of propaganda.

SEPTEMBER, 1962 3
(We consider the following significant because of its
source. The information presented did not come from an occur or New Age group.
It came from the London Daily Sketch, one of the world's largest
newspapers, which in turn adapted it from findings of a Church of England
committee
-The Editors)
The London Daily Sketch has published a step by step
summary of what happens when human beings "die," reports the
publication "Voice Universal" in its June, July, August 1962 issue.
The Daily Sketch findings, reported in booklet form, were based on the evidence
of a scientist Dr. Robert. Crookall, D.Sc., formerly principal geologist to Her
Majesty's Geological Survey, who published his findings in books sponsored by
the Churches' Fellowship for Psychical Study.
The article in "Voice Universal" quotes from the
Daily Sketch's book the following steps involved in transition, as follows:
"1. In addition to his ordinary body, man has a
psychical or soul body, and beyond that a spiritual body (Cp. the New
Testament writings of St. Paul). These survive.
"2. As a man approaches natural death in his old age,
his thoughts fly instinctively to friends already passed over, who can help him
in the transition to the after-life.
"3. Near the moment of death, we experience a
detailed review of our past earthly life (Cp. the well-known cases of
drowning men rescued and brought back to physical consciousness).
"4. In what is known as the pre-death coma, the dying
man has already partially vacated his "mortal coil," and may be
observed to stand by it, conscious and happy. (The silver cord-see Book of
Ecclesiastes-is not yet severed).
"5. No pain or fear is involved in the transition (though
any illness of the physical body itself, such as cancer, may entail pain, from
which death brings a welcome release).
"6. Many people do not realize for a time that they
have in fact "died," since they are aware of a greater sense of life
than before (these are those who die a violent death and pass over
instantaneously
4 UNDERSTANDING
- see the books of Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding,
C-in-C of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain).
"7. The etheric double that leaves the body at death
(as it also does, temporarily, in sleep) floats above it for
awhile-" churchyard ghosts."
"8. After transition friends are seen who have come
to reorient the new arrival to his fresh surroundings (close relatives, if
available).
"9 A period of 3 to 4 days intervenes while the
etheric double is disintegrating, and after this there is a full recovery of
conscious life (NB-this period can be shortened by cremation, which may take
place not less than 12 hours after death. In the case of violent death, there
is no intervening period-see above, and Lord Dowding's books).
"10. The "next world" is not yet the
paradise or heaven of the world scriptures, not purely spiritual, but
intermediate and preparatory. (The soul bodies o f still-living persons can
be seen, so that there is no abrupt change from earthly life).
"11 A second review of the past incarnation is now
undergone emotional and responsible. (Cp. Biblical "Judgments,"
the Egyptian and Tibetan Books of the Dead, etc., etc.).
"12. Each person goes to his own place, suited to him
(Swedenborg in "Heaven and Hell" gave one well-known account of
what happens, but this has been enlarged upon, and re-presented in a scientific
way, by modern seers).
"One of the most important facts that needs to be
widely publicized for the relief of the public at large is that there is no
pain, either at death, or when the body is vacated violently and
instantaneously. Time and again this was confirmed, e.g. `When my body bounded
against the rocks I became unconscious, without experiencing any pain
whatever.' A doctor who fell 100 ft., and heard the noise when his head struck
the corners of rocks, also said: `I felt no pain.'
"Space does not permit more than a few references to
the wealth of illuminating evidence presented in this book. Major Tudor Pole,
the well-known industrialist, archaeologist and writer, contributes two
striking instances in one of which he tells how his life was
SEPTEMBER, 1962 6
saved by a visit from a Scottish doctor using his soul
body while still alive in the flesh. After a broadcast appeal by the BBC, the
doctor was traced, and the case proved beyond a shadow of doubt.
"The Church of England commute that reported
favorably on the existence of discarnate spirits, survival, and the possibility
of communication with our own world, had its findings suppressed by Dr.
Cosmo Lang, but the Archbishop has made attempts to right this wrong since
his own transition, and in our own day the Bishop of Southwark comments:
`I have no patience with people who just write the whole thing off. I think the
work the Churches' Fellowship, for Psychical Study is important. Our job
is to examine the evidence. The weakness of the Church has been its refusal to
consider the evidence or discuss it.' "

Through the fossils, scientists have learned that the
Meta-sequoia or Dawn Redwood was at one time on the Pacific Coast along with
the Sequoia sempervirens and the Sequoia gigantia. A last stand of these trees
were discovered in the far interior of China by Dr. Ralph W. Chaney, University
of California scientist, who with Milton Silverman, S.F. Chronicle scientist
writer, made an expedition in 1948.
A few seedlings and many seeds were brought back to the United
States. Seeds were distributed to interested people who have planted these
seeds which grew into trees very fast. The wood is lighter in color than the
other redwoods and the tree loses its needles in the winter time after a show
of gorgeous gold color.
The tree which had been thought. extinct on the Pacific Coast
can now again be grown since it also will grow from cuttings. N. Edwin Johnson
of Santa Cruz has made several plantings of the Dawn, sharing the results of
the first few seeds that he was given through the "cuttings" he now
makes. One brought to Merlin recently will grow as will Merlin in the building;
of the New Age idea of Creative Purpose.

Light Said "No Myth"
(From Siskiyou Daily News, Yreka, Calif., July 17,
1962)
MOUNT
SHASTA-A Mount Shasta official who declines to allow his identity revealed,
declares the mysterious light reported over mountaintops is no myth. He saw it
recently over Mt. Eddy where it remained stationary for about 20 minutes,
moved, returned to its original site, then disappeared.
This man has tried to rationalize this object as being a
reflected beam from a snow patch. This, he says, scarcely explains all phases,
but he just doesn't want to become involved in its discussion, and resultant
theories.
"It's no lost object of mine," he finally
exclaimed, as he went about his municipal chores.
No less than two men living in the Mount Shasta area have
seen flying saucers but curtailed the story to but a few intimates.
Two Objects Move Ahead of Echo
(By the Associated Press, July 31, 1962)
Two objects passed just ahead of America's Echo satellite
last night. The sight was reported in Portland, Salem and Tacoma. Several
reports said the objects moved much faster than Echo but were not as bright.
One was said to be flickering, the other emitting a steady light.
Telephone calls jammed the switchboard of one Portland
television station. Other media also reported receiving calls.
Most callers said the objects appeared to be satellites,
but there was no official confirmation.
Echo is to appear in the Portland-Salem area again tonight
at 8:27 p.m. standard time.
X-15 Pilot Reports Mysterious Object
EDWARDS AFB, Calif., June 17, 1962 (UPI)-Maj. Bob White flew the X-15 rocket plane to a record altitude of nearly 59 miles
September, 1962 7
today-higher than man ever has flown before in a winged
aircraft and reported he saw a mysterious object.
White said he saw "something like a piece of paper
... we've never seen anything like this before," as he re-entered the
atmosphere. White qualified as America's fifth astronaut and first. "winged
astronaut" under Air Force regulations because he flew higher than 50
miles. He will be presented with astronaut wings Wednesday in Washington, D. C.
White at a press conference following his record altitude flight,
said he experienced "no unusual discomfort" from five times the force
of gravity.
He said he was puzzled about the foreign object he saw
when he glanced to his left out of the cockpit. White said that to his
knowledge no other X-15 pilot has seen such an object.
White said the paper-like object was gray in color and was
visible for a full five seconds and moved along with the X-15. He said he would
judge that it was about 30 or 40 feet from the plane.
Drought Disaster in New York
(United Press International story, July 17,
1962)
Ten New York counties were designated disaster areas today
in a 10-week-old eastern drought that showed no signs of ending.
The drought spread throughout the Middle Atlantic states,
drying crops and dropping streams to the lowest levels in years.
New York's two U.S. senators asked federal aid to help
water and feed livestock. An official of the New York Agriculture Department
said the drought was the worst in that area in two generations.
Some New York farmers were said to be preparing to sell
their cattle as a cutback measure.
The drought in at least one section of Pennsylvania was
described by a climatologist as the worst since the turn of the century.
New Jersey, which began its fourth week without rain
today, had five counties classified as drought disaster areas.
Twenty-two of Pennsylvania's 67 counties were designated
as drought disaster areas last Friday and Monday Gov. David Lawrence asked
Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman to add 17 more counties to the list.
South of the drought areas the problem was too much rain.
A

14-county area of North Carolina was designated a weather
disaster area after heavy rains caused damage estimated in the tens of millions
of dollars to crops. Several South Carolina counties also received disaster
area classification because of rain damage.
Virginia's tobacco farmers reported crop damage from heavy
rains.
(Add to the record the, fact that the west coast had
one o f the coldest. springs ever and the picture shapes' up as one of definite
changes in weather on a mass basis. Atomic tests? Polar shift? What do you

Science Uses Hypnotism to Guidance
NEW YORK, N. Y. (UPI), Feb. 22, 1962-If in the laboratory
you can produce a reaction in a human being's body by acting upon his mind, you
can figure people must be constantly doing it to themselves since their minds
are exposed to be acted upon by anything which happens to come along.
Dr. H. C. Bethune did it in his laboratory. He hypnotized
a man who was so hungry his stomach was demonstrably in spasm. Bethune
convinced the man there was a wonderfully delectable dinner in front of him and
he was eating it. It was entirely a hallucination but his stomach contractions
ceased.
He hypnotized other persons and told them that intense
heat was being directed against their ears. There was no directed heat at all,
of course; just the same, their ears became hot and this was factually
demonstrated with thermometers.
All this makes it reasonable to suppose Bethune has
exposed in all nakedness the working parts of psychosomatics which gives untold
millions of people endless trouble, to say nothing of the physicians they
befuddle with their mind-induced physical ailments. The mind believes it's body
to be ill, you see, and the body accommodates with symptoms.
The best-known and most-studied examples of this are in
certain skin diseases. The ugly eruptions are on the surface for anyone to see.
No one could possibly dispute the physicalness of the ailment. Yet it has been
proved that people can produce the symptoms with their minds.
Bethune was working in the main scientific stream of
psychosomatic investigations in his laboratory at the University of Edinburgh,
SEPTEMBER, 1962 9
Scotland. A current theory is that "organ
inferiority," either inherited or acquired, is involved. This
"inferior organ," whether skin or stomach or some other part, becomes
the target of misdirected emotional "high drive."
Bethune and his associate, Dr. Cecil B. Kidd, applied his
laboratory feats to four persons with plainly physical skin diseases which had
persisted for years. Some had relatives given to the same diseases and one
could suppose nothing could be more physical.
The four were hypnotized one by one. By suggestion made to
them in their hypnotized states, the scientists endeavored to divert the
emotional "high drive" away from the target, organ, the skin. They
tried to do it by distorting the perceptions of the four of themselves In all
four the "cure" worked-the skin eruptions cleared.
Now, these skin diseases have been "cured" by
hypnotic suggestion before but the method has never shown consistent results.
That is, it works in some but fails in most.. The scientists emphasized in
reporting to the technical journal, The Lancet that they did note claim
real cures.
"All these patients still have this underlying skin
anomaly or organ inferiority which predisposes them to their own particular
malady," they said.
What they had done was to direct emotional "high
drive" away from the target organ by inducing perceptual distortion under
hypnosis. In their words, they exposed "a mechanism whereby psychological
stresses can produce skin lesions in areas of somatic weakness." It now
remains to be seen if other scientists can exploit the “mechanism."

Truth cannot be confined. It must expand in consciousness;
it must always and ever find a wider periphery in the consciousness.
The truth, which today man, as yet of limited spiritual
understanding, can even comprehend is assuredly not all truth.
Pitiful indeed is the state of that man who builds a high,
well-nigh insurmountable wall about the bit of Truth he is able to grasp in the
infancy of his soul development. By so doing, he so stultifies his own further
development. that thereafter, throughout his entire earth-life, he remains ever
within that self-same enclosure; in that self-restrained soul-infancy.
Tear down your walls, ye people of God! Grow-widen-cease
to restrict either yourselves or others!
Think ye that to ye alone bath Truth revealed itself?
Open wide the doors and the windows in thine
understanding. Let in the wide sweep of the winds of purification; let all that
clutters, that deters, be swept away.
Who lost thou think thou art, that thou shouldst believe
thyself to have been selected above thy brethern for God's self-revelation? To
each one is revealed as much of God's Truth as, at the moment, that one can not
only comprehend but also assimilate, can build into his very being.
Of what. possible value to a man is mere erudition, if it
be not used to enrich his life, to enoble, not only himself, but all, all whom
he in any way contacts by transmuting it into soul-erudition.
I am not advising that one seek Truth in a variety of
cults, each endeavoring to out-lure the other. Use cults, denominations, not as
enclosures wherein you can abide, content to permit this or that self-appointed
leader to do any thinking for thee-use cults and denominations
14 UNDERSTANDING
as pausing places on thy ever ascending climb toward the
pinnacle of all Truth.
Follow that man-(if at your present stage of development
you must be led)-follow that man who calls thee, not to an enclosure, but who
leads thee to a hill-top, if, at present, that is as far as thou canst climb.
But even there he will not bid thee build for thyself a
temple, an enclosure of any kind and therein abide. After thy rest for
meditation and for assimilation of that Truth which thou hast to that point
acquired, he, thy inspired, God-led teacher will lead thee to the mountain top
and there he will leave thee-for by then thou wilt no longer need to be taught
by man. Thou wilt have attained within thyself all the understanding of Truth
that thou canst assimilate upon the earth plane.

How will you take it?
As the

Or as
the deepest pit that time can show?
Your's is the choice!
And it

Rather
on what has been in all the long years past.
What

Of good

To give you strength?
Or has
there been only sheer selfishness
And careless
trifling with that spark of life
Given to you to cherish;
And to
make into an angel or an imp--
To bless or curse you,
As you

That all things know?

Dear Editor
My interest in "Flying Saucers" began this one
cold October night, 1955, in New Jersey when I came out of the house to put
refuse in the cans. For some reason the sky looked rather strange that night
and I didn't go back in the house right away, instead I was looking at the
stars. All of a sudden I saw what looked like a star flare-up and then vanish
and in its place there was a red light. My eyes followed this light from the
north to about the north-east when it started to glow again like a star and
stop about 45 degrees off the horizon. It remained stationary at this point for
about five or ten minutes when it flared up again and disappeared into a red
light again. At this point I was doubting my senses very badly and called my
wife to verify what I saw. We both watched it move as a red light to another
position, start glowing like before then remain hovering about 45 degrees above
the horizon, disappear into a red light and move south of our house. It again
did what I just mentioned with one big exception, and that was that it came
directly over our house this time. As it went over us we could see three steady
red lights in the form of a perfect triangle, then as it began to move away
from us it started to glow like a bright star again and moved north where it
again stopped at about 45 degrees.
It remained there for about ten minutes then it flared up
and disappeared completely from sight, no red light this time. I gave thought
to the possibility of regular aircraft, but they don't have three steady red
marking lights and the only kind of craft that can hover is a helicopter which
I would have heard when it flew over the house. Even if it was a jet., if it
were low enough to see a separation between the lights it would have been low
enough to hear. Besides, jets have a white light in the nose and they blink.
Since living in Phoenix I have seen jets fly over at an altitude so high that
all the
SEPTEMBER, 1962 17
lights appeared as one and I could hear the sound of the
jets as they went over.
We have also seen in Phoenix what we feel was a flying
saucer. This was about 5:30, March 26th of this year on the Western horizon. It
was oval in shape and the color of the sun. The sun had already set and this
oval shaped object was moving away from us in almost. a straight line. If it
wasn't for power lines running horizontal to our sight we would not have
realized it was moving. It was too far away to be an airplane and to have
appeared as large as it did for the distance. We also thought it might have
been a cloud but they don't tilt at an angle, then straighten up again, then
tilt again and disappear into the haze, or I should say above the haze, on the
horizon.

Gratitude is the preventive of Pride and the foundation of
Humility. It is the highest refinement of justice and, indeed, a stepping stone
to love. Truly, one's Spiritual Life begins with Gratitude to God. Many people
have been accustomed to suppose that as long as their deeds conformed to the
law, they have done all that can reasonably be expected of them, and that their
thoughts and feelings are their individual business exclusively. But it is a
Cosmic Truth that any outward act is but the sequel to a thought and that the
type of thought which we allow to become firmly implanted in our minds will
sooner or later find expression on the plane of action. True Love and Gratitude
have taught that thoughts literally are things and that a wrong or negative
thought is just as destructive an act as a wrong deed. For the kind of thought
that we permit to occupy our mind manifests our choice of conduct. "Keep
thy heart with all diligence, for out of it. are the issues of Life." We
cannot rely upon ourselves and expect Spiritual Growth. The one thing for a
person to do is pray regularly, especially at the actual time of temptation,
and to place the responsibility for success fully upon God. To seek to
demonstrate beyond one's understanding is not Spiritual for Spiritual
development is a matter of growth and he that believeth

shall not unwisely make haste. When one fixes his
attention wholeheartedly upon Spiritual things, in the interim doing all that
needs to be done in the society of life, and without pushing or allowing
impatience to dominate him, he will be amazed to discover the pace at. which
the soul has hastened! Things that are not worth having soon disappear under
the action of Truth.
Demonstrate where you are. "Let your light so shine
that others seeing your good works will glorify the Father." These words
are Truth. They are eternal. They are real and the light of life. Therefore, be
grateful for who you are, what you are and cherish all good thoughts for of
such "are the issues of Life." Dwell not on past mistakes nor on the
thoughts of tomorrow for the thoughts of tomorrow will take care of themselves.
The past is but a guide for today. We live now, not yesterday or tomorrow, but
now. We live in eternity here and now, right now! Therefore, live this moment
to its fullest, for even as you read these words your mind is in tune with
Truth and if nurtured this Truth will make you free. Free to demonstrate
the Love, Gratitude and Humility that worlds are made of. Think of if! Claim
it! Do it! For we are truly Sons and Daughters of the Infinite Creator
and these eternal truths lie within us eagerly awaiting acceptance and
demonstration to all mankind.
Be not dismayed regardless of your circumstances or social
status. For these things pass away. They are temporary. It is a great, Cosmic
Law that like attracts like. Therefore think well and you will act well. Think
love and you will demonstrate love. Think God and you will soon be aware of
your true destiny and may rest assured that as long as you try, however
falteringly, to seek and do the Will of the Infinite Father, your destiny will
be secure in that realm which we call the Kingdom of God. For God will give you
what, you need! And truly, "As a Man thinketh, so he is."
Be not a hearer of the word only, but be a doer also. "Think and Grow
Rich" are not mere words of praise. They are true. You will be far richer
than thought possible and your rewards will be great. My "cup runneth
over" for the peace and serenity obtained will surpass all understanding
and it is a gift that the world cannot give nor take away. Only by your
thoughts can you destroy it, for man is endowed with free agency to choose good
or choose evil.
We know so very little and we must trust in Divine Truth
to receive

these Truths. Hear with your heart and your understanding
will be increased and evil will depart from you as surely
as God lives. ".. . and when you receive these words, I exhort you to ask
the Eternal Father in the name of Jesus Christ if they be true, and if you ask
with real intent and purity of heart, He will manifest the Truth unto you by
the Power of His Holy Spirit!" For as a man thinks, indeed, so he is.

The contributions to the Merlin radio fund now total
$662.06, an increase this month of $102. It has been surprising to note that
almost all of the contributions have been $5 or more from a total of 85 people.
A lot of people contributing 25 cents to $1 can build the radio station faster
than relatively few with donations of $5 or more. If everyone who has heard Dan
Fry speak were to contribute 25 cents Ave would have the most powerful radio
station available.
Recent contributors include Elsa Chipman, Camino, Calif.;
