1. LOCATION-Merlin is 7 miles northwest of Grants Pass, in the Rogue River Valley, world renowned for its beautiful scenery. The transportation and accessibility situation is excellent. The S.P. railroad line to Portland goes through Merlin, and the new freeway (Highway 99) crosses what will be the eastern border of the city. The new and modern airport with 5000 feet of blacktopped runway (it will soon be 7000 feet) is at the northern border. Merlin is only 4 hours from Los Angeles by existing air facilities, and yet because of its unique location, has a wonderful degree of peace, quiet and privacy.

2. CLIMATE-The climate is mild, with most of the precipitation occurring during the period of Nov. 15 to May 15. Very little rain falls during the summer months. The average annual rainfall is 29.64 inches (50 year average from U.S. Weather Bureau readings for Grants Pass area.)

Very little snow falls in the area, and that usually melts within a few hours.

The district around Merlin and Grants Pass has the lowest wind velocity in the United States, with an average of 3.3 miles per hour.

3. EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES-There is a new and modern grade school now in operation in Merlin, with a capacity of 400 students. About 240 are at present, enrolled. School buses take the high school students to the high school in Grants Pass at present, but the county will begin construction of a large new high school on the eastern edge of Merlin, within a few months.

4. HOUSING-The Merlin Development Co. has begun a building program to produce comfortable modern homes for everyone who comes to Merlin. Since we are already producing our own lumber, and will soon be producing our own concrete, we can build these homes for considerably less than the usual cost.

A variety of homes will be constructed to fit the various needs of those who come, and it will also be possible for you to have your home constructed according to your own specifications if you wish.

Financing will be available on all of these homes and pictures of some of them will be printed from time to time in the Understanding Magazine. A few rental homes are available in Grants Pass for those who wish to come early in order to pick out a site for their own home or to assist in the building of others. A trailer park is now available in Merlin for those with trailers.

5. EMPLOYMENT-Many types of employment will become available as the building program accelerates. The building of a city (even a small one) requires the application of a very large number of skills and services. Let us know what you have to offer, and we will find a place for it.

6. SURVIVAL CONDITIONS-In case of all out nuclear war (which appears more likely with each passing day), Merlin is in the center of one of the very few areas in the U. S. where independent survival is practical and probable. Merlin is 250 miles south of Portland and almost 400 miles north of San Francisco, the only conceivable targets in the area. Also, the prevailing wind is from the west where there are no targets closer than the Hawaiian Islands. The fallout hazard would therefore probably be less than in almost any other spot in the U.S.

The ground is fertile and with the application of a little water will grow almost any type of temperate zone crop.

Many natural resources exist in the area, which as yet are almost entirely untapped. Every nuclear scientist and military expert knows (whether he admits it or not), that in case of all out nuclear war, the possibility of survival in metropolitan areas is virtually nil. No matter what steps may be taken by civilian defense agencies, the population of these areas will simply cease to exist. This is not a pleasant thought, nor one upon which it is wish to dwell, but it is a fact which must be faced by those who are concerned with the survival of the present race of man upon this planet.

If nuclear war is avoided, Merlin may well become a model and a pattern for the development of similar communities throughout the United States and perhaps throughout the world.

A PRACTICAL MEANS

BY WHICH THE WORLD CAN BE MADE A BETTER PLACE IN WHICH TO LIVE

"And, God gave to every tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, to reproduce its own kind. Genesis I.

This is a profound statement, requiring true understanding, for this natural law applies to all seeds, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, for mankind lives in all these worlds, or states of consciousness.

Children are the seeds of humanity. The adult is already conditioned and more or less crystallized in his thoughts and habits, but the child is a virgin field, an unwritten page. Teach .them from earliest childhood, right useness, courage, self-respect, trust in God's plan, willingness to try to understand everything and everyone, teach out-going love to all that lives; sow the seeds of these qualities in the minds and hearts of young children everywhere and

in one generation the world would become a better place in which to live; in two generations much better. Why not begin now?

Is it not more "practical" to breed a race of people who are at peace with themselves, consequently with others, a brave, intelligent people, anchored in faith in God, by whatever name they call Him, than to learn to build increasingly greater weapons of destruction?

Look to the minds and hearts of our young children, for the ideas and ideals first learned are the mainsprings of all ideologies. Look to our inner faith, justice and peace and the outer world will improve accordingly for all things reproduce in kind.

UFO SEEN OVER TOLEDO AND BONO, OHIO

Beginning at 8:30 p.m., August 29, Joe Garcia, who is a male hair dresser at the Rainbow Beauty Shop, 1434 Broadway, Toledo, Frank Alaniz and three other persons saw UFO's over Toledo and Bono Ohio. They came from the North, in line, one behind the other. They appeared to be as large as the full moon, white in color with a blue-green tinge. They curved to the east and then stopped, hovering east of Bono. Two planes passed between the observers and the strange craft. At about 9:30 p.m., one of the three objects flew toward the north rapidly disappearing and changing to orange color. At about 10:11 p.m., a fourth object came from the west, flying toward the two objects still hovering east of Bono. This one moved ahead and stopped several times, changing color from Orange to blue to orange. Then it speeded up and disappeared rapidly to the east. All objects, were out of sight by 10:30 p.m.

Wayne S. Aho, formerly with U.S. Army Combat Intelligence, as a major, who has lectured on this subject in the United States and Canada since 1957, found upon checking other sources that a number of persons called in Sightings of UFO's last night to People's Opinion, a radio program on WSPD Radio, Toledo. The changes in color correspond to color changes seen in craft over Waterford township near Detroit, Mich., July 10 and 12, seen by fishermen and police officers in that area. The color Gold has also been noted.

This is the third sighting in recent weeks from Joe Garcia who lived originally at Lubbock, Texas, scene of the famous; Lubbock Lights of a few years ago. In this sighting, which was incidentally photographed and reported widely in the press, the craft were seen flying in V formation, appearing as luminous lights in the sky. Sightings of these strange craft have continued in the United States and other countries, especially since the famous Kenneth Arnold sightings near Mt. Rainier, Wash., in 1947, when he saw strange craft flying in formation and then darting between the mountain peaks. Sighting reports have been traced to the earliest ages and historical and religious records on earth, even to the earliest known language, the Sanskrit. It is a Sign of the time and has caused great wonder in the minds of millions who have found semi-official verification by such as Vice Adm. R. H. Hillenkoetter, USN ret. who has said (after retirement as Director of Central Intelligence Agency) that these craft are real, they are interplanetary and they are intelligently controlled. Rear Adm. Delmar S. Fahrney, former guided missiles chief of the Navy, made a similar statement upon his retirement. Craft are still being seen in great numbers throughout the world.

Note: The above item was submitted to all newspapers in the Toledo area by Wayne S. Aho. Not one is known to have published this item. The following morning after the sightings Wayne S. Aho called the Associated Press representative in Toledo. He indicated "he was not interested in the release." To the question, "don't you believe this?" he answered "NO! " He said "if there was anything to these reports some agency would tell us about it!" He was then asked if he did not do his own thinking? He said "I don't have to take this" and hung up!

Joe Garcia continued to report sightings in the Bono area throughout the week so on the evening of Sat., Sept. 2, Wayne and Dorothy Aho and a party, including Dorothy's mother Mrs. Myrtle Schmidt and Mr. Martin Schmidt, drove to Bono, some twelve miles from Toledo, to see for themselves. Wayne saw something! like looked like a star, twinkling in reddish color and thought it was possibly not a star. This was confirmed when, after parking the car in a quiet spot, Dorothy yelled in excitement, "Its MOVING!" All then

watched this object move several degrees of are as a white light toward the right, suddenly stop after an estimated sweep of perhaps 25 miles and begin twinkling in a reddish color once more. This was a repeat of an earlier experience in Rollo, Mo., in 1958 when some of this same party had a similar experience. Objects in the sky are not always what they appear to be!

A THEORY ABOUT THE "FATIMA" SOLAR MIRACLE

Oct. 12, 1911, in the book on "FATIMA"

"Gradually the sun grew pale, lost its normal color, and appeared as a sort of SILVER DISK, at which all could gaze directly. Then, rays of multi-colored light shot out from the `sun' in every direction, and every color of the spectrum. Meanwhile, the whole heavens seemed to be revolving as the `sun' spun madly on its axis, like a gigantic wheel of fire, painting the rocks, trees and faces of the people with sunshine such as human eye had never seen before. Three times it stopped and three times the mad dance resumed. Then, while the crowd fell to its knees in sheer terror; the `sun' suddenly seemed to be torn loose from its place in the heavens. Down it hurtled, closer and closer to earth, staggering drunkenly as it zigzagged through the skies. But, what seemed like the end of the world was at hand, the "sun' suddenly resumed its accustomed place in the heavens, whence it shone forth as peacefully as before."

My explanation is that it was really an extra-terrestrial spaceship, that could produce all these effects (however fantastic they seem.) First, it. could place itself between the sun and the audience, in such a way as to blot out the sun (which seemed to turn to a SILVER DISK.) All kinds of colorful lights have been seen in conjunction with flying saucers-therefore, the pilots could easily use these lights in rays that they could point in any direction. Spaceships have been also seen to spin around on their axis, and to zigzag.

Then, while still hiding the sun, the disk zigzagged closer and closer to the audience. As spaceships have been seen to disappear

suddenly, by bending the light-rays around their force-field and ionizing the air around them to form a vaporous cloud, it could easily have done so, and then moved aside to let the sun come out full again by moving out from between the sun and the earth. The book said nothing about how many clouds were in the sky at that time, if any.

This explanation is more reasonable and plausible, and therefore more believable than that the sun itself actually came closer to the earth. If it had done so, it would have upset the delicate magnetic balance of the solar vortex, in which the planets move, and might have even burnt everything up on earth.

The Star of Bethlehem might have been a spaceship that led the three wisemen and then hovered over the manger.

Christ may have been drawn up into a spaceship via its `transitor-ray' while it was shrouded in its onized cloud, at His ascension I have seen huge spaceships so shrouded, three at a time, with smooth edges to their ionized clouds, with two parallel straight lines through the center on each. Ordinary clouds are not like that!

Does the weather have any effect on your sentiments? Does it do something to your spinal telegraph? Does the effect of sweet music flowing up the Ages, the beauty of your surroundings, the blending of peaceful colors, the vibration of your whole being and the souls you invariably meet, have an effect on you? A good effect engendering well being, I mean. Can you give credence to the possibility that nothing just happens, everything happens just? When I am being receptive within my own particular limitations, those things certainly effect me. But this paper is not an impertinent questionnaire. It is, in fact, a reply to your Editors, whose impelling voice and pen, leave not an excuse for failing to write an article for UNDERSTANDING.

We are, at the moment, here in Waipapa, "down under" in New Zealand, having a downpour. Admittedly it has affected my sentiments. Fifteen minutes ago the writer was digging post holes round "State houses" at this 24 house Hydro-Electric settlement, now I am tuned again to UNDERSTANDING.

Waipapa is rather a lovely location on our Waikato river, from which a series of Hydro dams supply much current for the north island of New Zealand. The houses are situated on a plateau midst the surrounding hilly grandeur, overlooking the river-ravine and man made lake. Truly a. spot for meditation and connections with souls far off in ether. I have still got my feet on the ground. That phraseology seems to this Aquarian age better than "across the sea," the best our forbearers' mental unfoldment could handle. It befalls me as nothing less than a duty to enlighten your readers that down here in New Zealand you have associates who are persevering with, and have tolerance for the cross-section of topics you people are obviously trying to assess and fit into that most complex of mechanisms, Man, by furthering knowledge of himself and all that affects him. In this, your particularly neat journal becomes a medium of expression, so essential. Its size, paper quality, subject matter, and journalism, give it the dignity it deserves. Its boldness

of coverage, while it cannot be said will hold appeal to the majority here in New Zealand, could be of great value to our minority. From an expansion point of view, the thing is to find out who they are and where they live, then perhaps you shall acquire more fellow travellers.

From just two short tapes from an American friend, it is obvious to me that your minds are very responsive to general unfoldment, not being restricted to UFO exclusively, as are so many attempts being made to understand their significance. After all, if you were buying a new house, would you only look in one room?

When delving into the answers of Man, it is all too easy to fall to arguing at cross purposes. It is therefore a pleasure to note (and hear) your toleration with regard to the individual's right to acknowledge of his own free will, or otherwise, just what he desires.

So far my American friend has failed to tread on our toes here on any issue; varied ‘tho the pattern has been. It is consoling to know that we are not alone.. . Birds of a feather, stick together ...

Similarly, my friend representing UNDERSTANDING thought, invites news of UFO, politics, reincarnation, and even the weather -- an insatiable appetite for knowledge, but a good one.

Perhaps a political tape pen exchange on the topic known here as "Social Credit" will deter his ego a little. N.B. Social Credit is our youngest and 3rd major contestant in the political field of 80 seats, 4 of which are Moori . . . (Natives of N.Z.-Previous Owners).

Social credit is primarily a monetary reform group, audacious enough to shout, "What is physically possible, is financially possible." Perhaps at some later date we can consider subject more seriously ... This is simply goodwill correspondence. TERMINUS TERRA FIRMA

Since the appearance of Zinjanthropus Erectus approximately 1,750, 000 years ago, homo sapiens per se has evolved master of the planet but, sense bound, has not mastered some of his own lethal emotions. Too, often man's emotional responses dominate his actions, and his rational insight is submerged in a sea of turbulence. As a person loses control of his emotions, he becomes more confused, and tends toward non-survival. A person who has little emotional control becomes irresponsible to others, and thus to all mankind. The more irresponsible and apathetic people there are, the less our chances of survival become in the dawning Space Age. Seek to increase understanding, rational action, and the ability of people and you increase the survival potential of man.

To seek to understand man let us examine him and the universe in which he resides. From the metagalaxy to the micro-atomic structure, the matrix of the space-time complex imposes an inextricable pattern on forms. This matrix seems to consist of interpenetrating energy fields from which the fundamental particles, the building blocks of creation, are formed. The energy' field, electric or magnetic, is non-material; it is an activated area of space. Matter is energy condensed or concentrated, and energy is matter dispersed. Matter is energy concentrated into a. mass, such as electrons and protons, perhaps by being impregnated by the energy field. All organisms are enveloped in three or four energy fields of different characteristics and wave lengths. In the same manner as an atom, genetically speaking, the germ cell that is to evolve as a man has a matrix in the form of an energy field.

Let us examine this creature man closer. Man has a remarkable mind. It is a complex electronic system with the immortal "I" at the control center. Its most remarkable abilities include the recording and storaging of data perceived by the senses, to reason, to imagine, and to learn. These are functions, some of which take place in a structure called the cerebral cortex, and operate along the electronic circuits called the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, as well as the enveloping energy field. Another operation is the secretion of cortisone and adrenalin, each modifying

the metabolism of the organism, a function altered by man's emotional response. The mind is the analyzer and recorder-it records in images or photographs the energy waves man's senses pick up. Somehow this imagery abets extrasensory perception. The mind is a key to man's understanding. But let us search a little further.

Love is an integral factor in man's make-up; it is not just a superficial emotion. The willingness to grant the reality of another's viewpoint, is part of understanding, and this and affinity are components of love, if one considers them so.

Presently, Man on Terra Firma is threatened with the most hideous and irrational holocaust of all time, and that is nuclear war. A recent development., the Neutron Bomb, is calculated to spread lethal doses of radiation without any attending explosion, detrimental only to living organisms. If the present ideological conflict between the USSR and the USA continues one can with certainty predict the results by game theory, allowing for no hidden factors, such as the intervention of the extraterrestrials.

As Socrates stressed virtue and moral responsibility as an ethical foundation, before it is too late, I echo that ancient phrase, "Man, Know Thyself."

FLYING SAUCER SIGHTING

(Sighting o f Mr. and Mrs. M. Fernandez of Mendocino, California, during July, 1961.)

My husband Manuel Fernandez and my cousin William Bount well of P.O. Box 183, Corning, Calif., observed an object in the sky near the moon, as big as a wash-tub of same shape when first spotted-It went to the North at terrific speed; as it went it grew gradually smaller into a tiny speck until it faded into the distance There were two Jets that seemed to be chasing it. The Jets with their 400 and some miles per hour were of no speed at all to compare with this silvery object. This occurred at about 10:50 A.M. on July 6th, 1961, at the Fernandez Summer Home on Little Lake Road on East Mendocino, Mendocino, California, one and one-half miles East of No. 1 Coast Highway, Il miles south of Fort Bragg, Calif.

SYMBOLICAL LANGUAGE -ITS USE

Many of the older editions of the Bible contained a Symbolical Language of Scripture. This was designed to be of help to biblical students in gaining a greater understanding of parables, symbolic dreams and difficult verses of scripture. It is unfortunate that the more recent publishers of bibles have omitted this helpful feature.

This language contains a list of words which stand as the symbol. The symbolic meaning of each word is given and a passage of scripture for illustration.

The following examples will help to illustrate its use.

First

Genesis 37th. Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold into Egypt, dreamed he saw the sun, the moon and eleven stars make obeisance unto him.

The eleven stars suggests that the dream represents a family condition, there being eleven sons beside Joseph.

The words sun, moon and stars need to be defined symbolically. The symbolic meaning of sun is a supreme ruling power, the moon is a subordinate ruling power and stars is subordinate rulers. Then by substitution we find that Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold into Egypt, dreamed he saw a supreme ruling power (His father), a subordinate ruling power (His mother) and eleven subordinate rulers (His brothers) make obeisance unto him.

Now the dream indicates that, at some future time Joseph would be so placed that his father, mother and brothers would make obeisance unto him.

Later chapters in Genesis relate how the dream became literal when the symbolic meaning of the words sun, moon and stars was used.

When Joseph first told the family his dream his father immediately rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? This seems to indicate that the interpretation of dreams was a part of their knowledge. Second

unto ten virgins which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them

But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bride groom cometh; go we out to meet him.

Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil: for our lamps are gone out.

But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves.

And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.

Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.

But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the son of man cometh.

In this parable the words needing their symbolic meaning are virgin, lamp and oil.

Virgins are those undefiled in the ways of the world, lamp means directive light or guidance and oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit.

The five foolish virgins could not go to meet the Master for they had not taken the time nor made the effort to learn how to be guided by the Holy Spirit.

Sat., Nov. 18: "Voices From Other Planets," a program of tape recordings, will be presented by the El Monte Unit of Understanding. The tapes are of messages from space being on various subjects of interest. New Lexington School, 708 W. Bodger St., El Monte.

Sat., Nov. 25: Daniel W. Fry, founder and president of Understanding, will lecture for Inglewood Unit, #15 on "The Infinity of Reality" at 8 p.m. in the Business and Professional Women's Clubhouse, 820 Java St., Inglewood. This will be the third anniversary of the Inglewood Unit and the third time Dan Fry has spoken on a unit, anniversary.

News Of Understanding, Inc.

A successful and harmonious annual meeting was held by the units of Understanding, Inc., during the Giant Rock Convention in October. A total of 18 of the 43 active units were represented by delegates present in person, while another half dozen were represented by proxy. A new set of bylaws were adopted, and four directors were elected. Understanding's board of directors now is composed of Daniel W. Fry, president of Understanding; Celia Barnes of San Mateo, unit #2; Richard Dachner of San Francisco, unit #11; Steele Goodman of Sacramento, unit #46; Ron Hansen of Monterey, unit #34; Isaphene McGuire, formerly of Santa Cruz, unit #9 and now in a unit currently forming at Cleator, Arizona; Cleve Twitchell, of El Monte, unit #1; Paul Weast of Buffalo, N.Y., unit #37, and Betty Lou Webb, of Douglas, Ariz., unit #33.

The units elected Kerrtu Campbell of El Monte, unit #1, as corporation treasurer; Mary McAlpine of Marin County, unit #31, as recording secretary, and Florence Twitchell of El Monte, unit #1, as corresponding secretary.

EL MONTE, unit #1, heard a talk by C. A. Honey, Anaheim engineer who has been designated by George Adamski to take over his work, during October.

INGLEWOOD, unit #15, entertained Orfeo Angelucci, author of "Secret of the Saucers" and "Son of the Sun," recently. He spoke on "Flying Saucers and Their Revelations."

SAN BERNARDINO, unit #29: Kelvin Rowe addressed this unit during September, telling of his contacts with space beings.

DOUGLAS, Ariz., unit. #33 has changed its meeting dates to the second and fourth Friday evenings of the month at 8 p.m. The unit reports that its activities are progressing exceptionally well. Riley Crabb was to be the unit's first fall speaker, late in October;

New Units

Understanding welcomes its 48th American unit, to be located either at Placerville or Camino, California. A new unit also is forming at Cleator, Arizona. Further details of both units will be announced in forthcoming issues of this magazine.

Giant Rock Convention

A crowd estimated at between 12,000 and 13,000 attended the annual Spacecraft Convention at Giant Rock Airport, Calif., last month. The attendance estimate was made by George Van Tassel, host of the annual event. Van Tassel gave several interesting talks during the convention. Other speakers included Dan Fry, president of Understanding; George Hunt Williamson, the anthropologist; Orfeo Angelucci and Truman Bethurum, flying saucer contactees; Frank Stranges, evangelist, and Gabriel Green, president of the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America.

Tape and Book Libraries

Services through which anyone may borrow both tape recordings and books by mail from Understanding will soon be made available to the public. Two hardworking units are making this service possible. Oklahoma City, Okla., unit #44, is putting a library of tape recorded lectures and other recordings together, while Buffalo, N.Y.,

unit #37, is assembling a book rental library. Lists of tapes and books and the procedures for getting them will be announced later.
