Dedicated to the propagation
of a better understanding among all the peoples of the earth, and of those who
are not of earth.

The necessity of writing editorials several weeks before
publication, has a serious drawback in that comments which may be timely
pertinent, and sometimes prophetic when written, usually become ancient history
before they are published.
As this editorial is being written, Richard M. Nixon has
just completed his speech of resignation to the American public, and to the
world. The "erosion of his power base in congress," by which he
justified his act, was not the result of partisan politics, sudden whims or
last minute disclosures, but the inevitable culmination of several years of
intensive investigation, examination and endless disclosures of disturbing
fact.
Millions of words have been spoken and written in the
public media concerning this event, and before this article appears in print,
more mil-lions of words will have joined them. It would seem that nothing new
could possibly be said upon the subject, or any facet of it. At best, we can
only present a simple and concise summation. Since these are seldom attempted
in the popular media however, such a summary may have a purpose, even though
published at such a late date.
Mr. Nixon, as president, was strongly motivated by an
inner need for worldwide recognition of his personal abilities as a leader, and
as a
2 UNDERSTANDING
molder of destiny. History will inevitably record that he
did indeed demonstrate considerable talent in this direction. His downfall
resulted from an error which has been common to all dictators, and to many
others who have acquired positions of power. That error is simply the belief
that his ends are great enough to justify any means.
Unfortunately for Mr. Nixon, his belief was not shared by
his congress, or by the majority of the American People, and so he fell from
power. Even in his fall however, he achieved a number of historical firsts for
which he will long be remembered, although perhaps not in the manner he would
have chosen. He was, of course, the first United States President ever to
resign the office, and the first to name his own successor in office.
If any lesson can be said to have emerged from Watergate,
it is simply a strong and timely reminder to all persons in public office, that
they are the servants of the people, not their masters. They are hired
to represent their constituents, not to dominate or to deceive them. The
fact that an office seeker, be he President or County Clerk, has man-aged to
acquire a few more votes than his competitor, does not give him the
privilege, "Executive" or otherwise, of concealing from his employers,
the things he is doing, in their name, with their power and with their
money!
If this one fact can be brought home to every person in
public office, the benefits of Watergate will far outweigh its costs.
Once in a newspaper column James Marlow wrote: "The
history of man is evolutionary and the one predictable thread running through
it is that there will be change, subtle, or sudden, because of new ideas and
new ambitions, or new conditions." Certainly this applies to today's
un-settled world, for as man's thought changes, so does his society. The
creative energy of the universe continuously pours into man's mind and is
limited in its expression only by his degree of development and under-standing;
and often the changes that follow are not so much revolutionary as progressive
steps in a natural evolutionary process.
The Bible tells us that in the beginning was the Word and
the Word was God. God spoke and Creation took place. At first there were only
plants and animals, but these did not satisfy the desire of the Creator, and he
created man. He made him different from the lower animals by giving him a ray
from His own spirit and promised him dominion over all other forms of life. As
mankind evolves, then, he is merely trying to gain dominion over land, sea and
sky as was promised him.
OCTOBER 1974 3
Hindu philosophy holds, in part, to the theory of
evolution as maintained by our modern scientists, but goes further. It teaches
that not only physical forms are subject to the evolutionary process, but that
the soul embodied in those forms, is also subject to them: that higher or finer
physical vehicles must evolve for the constantly advancing souls to occupy. In
this regard Brown Landone wrote: "Man's body of tomorrow will be a
purified structure of such crystal clarity that all the glories of the rainbow
of spirit shall manifest fully."
The task of man in this new age is to seek to become more
godlike. To achieve this, even in degree, will require great changes in our
thinking and behavior patterns. How much greater, then, will be our responsibilities:
we shall have to become our own builders, our own creators, perhaps our own
saviors, to avoid becoming our own destroyers. These thoughts must have been in
the mind of the late atomic scientist, Dr. Arthur H. Compton, when he tried to
present a scientific side to religion in an address at the University of Chicago
not long before he died. He suggested that it would appear that God was
shifting responsibility for the evolution of life from His shoulders to man's-a
process that would approach completeness as science advances. Then he added
ironically, "Considering the obvious errors we are making, we may be
thankful that we do not yet have complete control!"
It would seem the logical conclusion that today's science
and religion should join forces to unite their knowledge of spirit and matter
for the betterment of all mankind. Science can work with religion, but cannot
take its place.
Man has always found some form of religion to satisfy his
spiritual need. As the scope of this need has now widened, religion must
broaden to keep step. Hard as it may be for some to believe, many present-day
theologians agree with metaphysicians that Christianity as it is practiced by
most sects must either change or perish. Too many faiths are still heavy with
dogma and creeds that tend to separate rather than unite men in the true
brotherhood that Jesus taught. If the coming era ushers in a Christianity that
works from within outward, it could influence all men's thoughts and actions.
Then the commandments of Jesus to "love God with all your heart and your
neighbor as yourself" would be the law of our lives, not just instances of
rare exception.
An example of the application of this law was brought out
in a news-paper account of a recent tragedy. It told how a man living in California
shot at a gopher in his back yard. The bullet that killed the gopher ricocheted
and killed a little girl in a house in the rear. A coroner's jury could not
agree whether or not the man was criminally responsible for the child's death.
Later a Superior Court judge dismissed a manslaughter
4 UNDERSTANDING
charge after receiving a letter from the child's mother.
It read in part: "I do not believe any good purpose could be served by
insisting that this case be tried. My neighbor will punish himself a thousand
times more than any law could do. For the good of everyone, and for our own
peace of mind, we feel the case should be dismissed." In expressing his
gratitude, the man said: "It was the love of God at work in her. Only a
person who believes wholeheartedly in God could have her attitude. I can go on
taking care of my family now."
Perhaps in the bright years to come we shall all be like
this mother, never allowing hate and revenge to destroy our fellowmen. Who can
say what undreamed of opportunities will open to the man of the future as he
stands among the ruins of this, our own age, and looks ahead with faith and
confidence?
The truth of man is in the heart of Eternity, and time in
its fullness shall reveal it.
ONA LACY HUNTER
There is an ancient question that, even today, people are
asking them-selves: AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER? You are your brother's keeper in
the sense that you should care what becomes of him, and you should let him know
this. There is far too much INDIFFERENCE as to the fates of millions of people
in this world, myriads of whom are living lives of "quiet
desperation."
The best kind of help to offer anyone is, first, understanding.
An impartial, friendly interest in his welfare, cannot fail to have a good
effect on his morale. Second, the aid you offer him should enable him to help
himself. This cannot be stressed too strongly or too often. Where our Foreign
Policy has employed this idea, in aiding other nations on a people-to-people
basis, it has been successful. If the time should come when America needed aid,
this is what most Americans would prefer.
An independent man is a functioning unit, a "going
concern." He has pride, he can have integrity and he can afford to be
concerned about the welfare of others. So, you see, in answering our initial
question, we come full circle.
The other side of the coin of service is the Server ...
You! When a "server" is mentioned, one immediately thinks of a
servant. In a way this is true . . . a server is a servant . . . but to serve
one's fellowman does not mean to be servile, nor a doormat. A servant's
position seems to be a humble one-but is it? Jesus said, "The first shall
be last and the last first!" If He did not despise even so-called menial
tasks that were
OCTOBER 1974 5
helpful to others, who are we to do so? It does not matter
to God whether you lead the parade of humanity, or bring up in the rear; it is
your motive in doing it that is important.
There is a great difference between an officious person
deciding what is "best" for someone else, and a simple willingness to
do the task at hand, pleasant or not, with cheerfulness and a smile. These
qualities-willingness and good humor are worth at least as much as the service!
Who likes to have grudging service? Ah, but what a joy it is to be aided by one
who has a song in his heart!
Suppose one diligently seeks for truth over the years, and
finds it. His life can be filled with the beautiful light of this truth, and
his joy can grow to such proportions that he must share it with someone else or
burst! He is impelled to say, "I have found the light, come and see it
with me!" For if a man has truth and shares it not, he has lost it in the
beginning. It is in brief moments of great, illuminating joy, that we are closest
to the doorway of Heaven.
A most wonderful way a server can give to a fellowman is
to help him to a better understanding of himself and his world, to lift his
spirit on the wings of inspiration, to offer him a philosophy of life in which
hope is enthroned. The giving of wealth is not the riches meant in giving unto
others. Rich beyond measurement are the qualities of mind that bring untold joy
to the hearts of men.
"Suffer each man to live his own life and die his own
death; sympathize not to his hurt, my beloved; condole only with those who say,
'We bring our all to the altar as it pleaseth God'; For verily they have need
of your condolence, being made of griefs to learn self-sacrifice.
"I say unto you, unless ye do distinguish between the
worthy and the unworthy, ye can make no progress, for those most in need of helping
themselves will ask most of you."
-Golden Scripts,
Chapter 70, Verse 13-15
There are hazards in service. We must learn to wait until
asked to render aid. We must learn to give . . . to serve with wisdom. As each
one of us learns to consult the Silence within him, he will gradually become
aware of the true need of the one he would serve.

6 UNDERSTANDING
I am a Roman Catholic.
What I was born to believe, I believe, and yet I know,
have always known, that there were other meanings, secret meanings, hidden
meanings to the teachings I had learned almost from birth.
"God is everywhere," they told us, but never
told us how, never told us it is not enough to merely know that God is here and
there and there, never told us the greater truth that God is here and there and
there. That God is all, and all is God.
Still, they search, as I search, as do we all. Never have
I doubted the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist.
Never have I doubted the benefits of the Sacrament of Penance. Never have I
doubted these things, though I know well the Church's reaction, were I to speak
of my study of the occult in the Confessional. Had I spoken of my belief in a heliocentric
solar system a few scant centuries ago, it would have been the same reaction.
Or if, in those bygone days, I had spoken out against the burning of heretics,
or protested the innocence of witches, it would have been likewise.
Yet if I had lived in those centuries past, I would not
have confessed those things, no matter how devoutly I believed in the genuine
truths the Holy Catholic Church teaches. My first duty is to my conscience, to
the things I know in my heart are right. Is that not one of the Church's basic
teachings-that for a sin to be mortal, one must feel that it is a mortal sin?
Could I, in good conscience, confess that I have
"sinned" by studying works that help me to better understand the
words of Jesus Christ? Is it a "grievous offense" to search for a
greater knowledge of man and the universe?
Perhaps the greatest misconception spread by virtually all
traditional churches is that of the personalized, humanized God, forgetting the
ad-monition of St. Paul to the Romans, 1:23: "And they changed the glory
of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man,
and of birds, and of four footed beasts, and of creeping things." Would
not any rational being understand that the entity we call God is more than
that?
The Church grows in awareness because its members grow in
aware-ness. Those who have the courage to stay and advance their views cause it
to grow. Throughout the centuries, there have been those who have rejected the
false doctrines perpetrated by the Church, and yet refused to brand themselves
heretics, or to tell these "sins" in the Confessional.
Believe in the rightness of truth and wisdom. Believe that
God is truth! Believe that the study of the new mysticism is no more heretical
OCTOBER 1974 7
than the study of astronomy or hypnotism or any other
science once condemned by the Catholic Church.
We have a duty to the Church. It is not "The Catholic
Church, right or wrong," but more, "The Catholic Church, when it is
right, God bless it, when it is not, let's make it right." We must bring
the truths of mysticism- - into the too traditional Church. Together, we must
raise the Catholic Church to the lofty spiritual position it must hold for
today's world. For the people of today have grown weary of the traditional concepts
of religion and God. The mysticism of this enlightened generation offer a new
answer to many thousands. Or, not a new answer, perhaps, but one we have heard
all too seldom.
We have a choice now. It is no longer between
narrow-minded traditionalism and fundamentalism on one hand and materialistic,
short-sighted atheism on the other. It is the knowledge that man was meant to
have, the truths he was meant to hear. And though it has gone by many names
through the centuries, one of these names is -UNDERSTANDING.

ADVANCE INSTITUTE FOR PSYCHICAL STUDIES
(From time to time we offer our readers information
relative to groups and studies, etc. allied to our goal of total
understanding.)
During the month of September, 1972, the first meeting of
the Advance Institute for Psychical Studies, a parapsychological research
center, was held at the University of Mississippi. The purpose of this first
meeting was to decide a logical procedure concerning the investigation of paraphysical
and parapsychological occurrences. Since that time, the A.I.P.S. has attempted
to bring the resources of modern scientific techniques to the study of such
paranormal phenomena as extra-sensory perception and psycho kinesis. The
Institute also investigates reports of spontaneous occurrences including:
telepathic and pre-cognitive dreams, apparitions and out-of-body experiences.
Perhaps the most important notion advanced by the
Institute is the belief that information concerning scientific discoveries in
parapsychology and related areas should be made available to the general
public. For this reason the A.I.P.S. attempts to correspond with every society
and individual interested in learning more about the wonderful properties of
the mind.
At present, the Institute is involved in a series of
precognitive experiments. It is hoped that through these tests, new facts will
arise concerning
8 UNDERSTANDING
the relationship between precognition and the areas of
I.Q., racial differences, and mood behavior. These tests are to be conducted
over a period of 7 months (May-Nov). In conducting these tests standard
experimental procedure is used in that a series of trials are given using a set
of cards known as Zener cards.
In keeping with modern scientific instruments, the Institute
recently purchased an electro-radiation-field photography unit (Kirlian Photography).
It is hoped that this unit, through objective experimentation, will become
standard equipment in the search for more scientific means of testing psi
ability. At present the instrument is being used in parapsychological centers
across the United States in tests concerning faith healing and psychokinesis.
The A.I.P.S. however is very interested in its possibilities as a means of
detecting telepathic transmission.
The final investigation being conducted by the society
concerns the poltergeist activity in certain areas of the southern United
States. During the past year, the Institute has investigated numerous places
in the South.
It is hoped that any one interested in poltergeist
activity or who has encountered such occurrences will write our Institute. We
are also interested in receiving letters from anyone interested in any area or
related area of psychical research. The address is: C. E. Lindgren, Advance Institute
for Psychical Studies, P.O. Box #245, University of Mississippi, University, M.S.

Land: What Is It For?
What is land? What is it for? And the things on it, what
purpose do they serve? These questions are certainly in the fore of a lot of
conversation lately among environmentally aware citizens, but we have not read
a better summation of answers to these questions than the ones that follow:
"The Great Chief in Washington sends
word that he wishes to buy our land. How can you buy or sell the sky-the idea
is strange to us. Yet we do not own the freshness of the air or the sparkle of
the water. How can you buy them from its :' Every part of this earth is sacred
to my people. Every shiny pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the
dark woods, every clearing and humming insect is holy in the memory and
experience of my people.
"We know that white man does not understand our
ways. One portion of the land is the same to hint as the next. for lie is a
stranger who
OCTOBER 1974 9
comes in the night and takes from the land whatever he
needs. The earth is not his brother but his enemy, and when he has conquered it
he moves on. He leaves his fathers' graves, and his children's birthright is
forgotten.
"There is no quiet place in the white man's
cities. No place to hear the leaves of spring or the rustle of insect wings.
But perhaps because I am savage and do not understand-the clatter only seems to
insult the ears. And what is there to life if a man cannot hear the lovely cry
of the whippoorwill or the arguments of the frog around the pond at night.
"The whites, too, shall -pass -perhaps sooner than
other tribes. Continue to contaminate your bed and you will one night suffocate
in your own waste. When the buffalo are all slaughtered, the wild horses all tamed,
the secret corners of the forest heavy with the scent of many men, and the view
of the ripe hills blotted by talking wires. Where is the thicket? Gone. Where
is the eagle? Gone. And what is it to say good-bye to the swift and the hunt,
the end of living and the beginning of survival. "
The words are those of Chief Sealth of the Duwamish Tribe
in Washington. He wrote them in a letter to President Franklin Pierce in 1855.
" . . A savage?" Hardly. He was, if anything, far more civilized and
certainly more cultured than most of his own day and any day since. We give
thanks to the Oregon State Commission's Rollie Rousseau for passing this letter
on to us in the commission's monthly Bulletin.
It is as poignant an appeal for true humanity as we have
seen, and it is so terrifyingly prophetic that we must only assume that Chief
Sealth may have been correct about the tribe of whites being threatened with
extinction, unless we, too, become lovers of the land, and clean our beds
before we suffocate in them.

Saucer Over Odense, Denmark
(UFO Contact, IGAP Journal, April 1974)
On the 15th of February, 1974 at 4:50 P.M., a flying saucer was photographed over the city of Odense in Denmark.
Mr. Jorma Viita, a Finn working in Denmark, reports:
"I was on my way, on a bicycle, to a meeting at the Judo Club. I had my
camera with me, because I wanted to take some pictures at the meeting.
"To my great surprise, I saw a flying object show up
over the Odense Shipbuilding Yard. I estimated it to be some 15-30 feet long
and 6-10 feet high. Altitude around 600-1000 feet. It moved from east to west
10 UNDERSTANDING
and I could see it for about two minutes. I managed to
take three pictures."
Editor's note: An expert has looked at the film.
Here are his comments: "The film contains a series of private snapshots
and three shots of an unidentified object. The genuineness cannot be
questioned. It is technically possible to make double exposures, but this
demands a rather advanced technical apparatus. Nothing points in the direction
of tricks."
Sighting Over Nagai City
(Special Report, CBA International, Yokohama, Japan,
Dec. 1973)
A photograph, showing a luminous object with a trail
streaming and flying away from northeast to southwest in the night sky, was
photo-graphed by a police sergeant, Yoshiyuki Matsuda, chief of the traffic
section of the Nagai Police Station. Matsuda was taking in the scene of a
traffic accident that occurred in Nagai City around 11:00 P.M. on July 9, 1973.
The police sergeant said the night was cloudy after a rain
and no star was to be seen. The location was in the middle of rice fields,
without illumination from neon lights. He took nine pictures at the accident
scene. The "light" picture was found on the first frame.
The negative was examined by CBS INTERNATIONAL and proved
to be neither a flaw, a ray leak, nor a ghost image.
In the meantime, an UFO incident to prove this occurred in
the prefecture, caused a sensation. In Yamagata City, that lies close to Nagai City,
a few round objects, shining milky white, about 30-40 cm. in diameter, appeared
over the vicinity of the summit of Mt. Ohmori. More than 50 inhabitants saw
them appear and disappear repeatedly for over four hours from 9:00 P.M.
Yamagata Shimbun, a local paper reported this sensational "Flying Saucer
Show" with a photograph:

Astronaut Student of Psychic Phenomena
(The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio, 7/28/74)
NEW
YORK (AP)- Moonwalker Edgar Mitchell, the first earthling to test ESP in
space, is convinced from studies he has made that "the evidence of psychic
healing is unavoidable."
The sixth man to walk on the moon writes in an
introduction to a new book, We Are All Healers, by Sally Hammond, that
"we do not have clear answers from scientists-or from psychics
themselves-which explains the psychic healing event."
The retired astronaut reports that this healing phenomenon
apparently has accounted for the unexplained disappearance of large tumors in a
person dying of cancer, a case in which a shortened leg grew 4-1/2 inches to
normal size in four days, and the restoration of sight in a woman whose optic
nerves were shown by X-rays to be completely wasted away.
These observations, he says, cannot be dismissed as mental
or emotional disorders, especially when the person healed professed disbelief
in this form of treatment before the cure occurred. He adds:
"How such dramatic changes take place is a mystery to
science, and it may be that entirely new laws and forms of energy must be recog-nized
before the mystery is solved. In any case, science and orthodox medicine can no
longer ignore the fact of psychic healing."

Girl Claims Power of Healing
(Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch 7/3/741
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP)-Thousands of people are traveling to a
humble home in Banana Hill, 20 miles from here, to see a 19-year-old school
girl who claims a divine power of healing.
Sceptics and believers alike are making the pilgrimage to
see Margaret Wangari, who has been described by a local clergyman as working
through "the hand of God."
Two of her most spectacular cures are claimed to be that
of a woman who had been crippled for 10 years and the restoration to normality
of a mentally disturbed man who used to run through the capital's streets in
the buff.
Margaret claims her powers came to her after she heard the
voice of

God and saw a vision while attending a Christian camp at Njoro,
50 miles from here.
On her return home, she effected two apparent cures and
others have been claimed. People are now flocking to see the "miracle
worker." It is also rumored she has the Biblical gift of speaking in
unknown tongues.

Abominable Snowman Reported
(Chronicle-Telegram, Elyria, Ohio, 7/27/74)
KATMANDU, Nepal (UPI)- Police reported finding clear hand
and foot prints of a two-tone hairy beast which a 19-year-old girl yak herder
said attacked her near the foot of Mt. Everest, the official Nepal news agency
said yesterday.
The young woman said she was attacked by a yeti-the
so-called abominable snowman-which killed five yaks in herd a week ago near the
village of Pheriche, near Mt. Everest, the world's highest mountain.
The creature's handprints were 10.5 inches long and four
inches wide, the agency said. Its foot prints were 12.5 by 4.5 inches.
The young woman said the beast was covered with thick
black hair on the lower part of its body and brown hair on top.

Trips Into Outer Space
(Midnight, June 10, 1974)
Fed up with run-of-the-mill vacations? Well, cheer up-in
the near future man will be able to holiday in space.
And, if you're lucky, you might even have the opportunity
of working there, claim space experts.
In the past decade, space has been a remote frontier,
accessible only to astronauts. But new knowledge and technology will change all
that, says Dr. Christopher Kraft of the Space Center in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Kraft adds that the change will occur sooner than we
think, as space offers attractive opportunities for profit and for enriching
life on earth.
In fact, recent experiments have proved that
space-produced metals and crystals are so strong and pure, they outperformed
any ever made on earth. These results have attracted several potential
investors for space factories and laboratories.
More and more companies are showing an interest,"
said Kraft. "I think in another few years they are going to be interested
in building their own space labs."
Kraft also points out that the lack of gravity in space
may bring new
OCTOBER 1974 13
hope for heart disease patients-since physicians claim
that - with the stress of gravity removed - ailing hearts would not have to
work as hard,
and could therefore heal more easily.
"I can imagine that there will be hospitals in space
because of the implications of relieving stress on the heart," he said.
It's an idea well worth consideration.
UFOs Serious Matter
(Williamsport, Penn. Sun-Gazette, 7/1/74)
AUSTIN, Tex. (UPI)- Twenty-six years ago the Air Force
prepared a re-port that proved Unidentified Flying Objects were actually
spacecraft from other planets but the report was destroyed, according to a
physics professor at East Texas State University.
Dr. Arlen Zander said UFOs should be taken seriously,
especially by those who could study them and prepare serious data about them.
"A good hard look at some of the serious evidence,
the photographic evidence, the physical traces certainly should not leave any
doubt in the true scientist's mind that there is something unidentified
involved," Zander said Sunday.
Zander said 26 years ago the Air Force assigned a task
force with the code name "Project Sign" to study UFOs and issue a
documented report. "In September of 1948 Project Sign issued a top secret
status report and the conclusions of this status report was that UFOs are truly
extra-terrestrial craft," he said.
Zander said the Air Force chief of staff refused to accept
the conclusions presented in the report and ordered all copies of it destroyed.
Zander said many more UFOs than reported are sighted by persons afraid of
public ridicule.

Clean Killer of 'Skeeters'
(Daily Courier, Grants Pass, Ore. 7/17/74)
By T. Lee Hughes, Associated Press Writer
MACOMB, ILL. (AP)- A scientist says he has discovered a
type of bacteria that can kill infant mosquitoes by the billions, has no
apparent effect on the ecology and could save millions of lives.
The bacteria could be a potent weapon in fighting malaria,
said Dr. Samuel Singer, associate professor of biological sciences at Western Illinois
University.
14 UNDERSTANDING
Malaria is transmitted by the anopheles mosquito and kills
about 10 million persons worldwide each year.
The racket-shaped bacteria attack tiny tadpole-like mosquito
larvae growing near the surface of ponds, lakes and other water bodies.
One cupful of the bacteria would be enough to control
mosquitoes in the average farm pond or lake, said Singer.
The approach would also help control yellow fever and
other diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, Singer said. He said it is likely
that other bacteria could be used to kill black biting flies and the tiny water
snails that transmit parasitic worms.
"It's not as important that we've found something to
kill mosquitoes as it is that we are starting a kind of approach," said
Singer. "That approach is to use a disease that's found in nature to fight
the insect."
In the past several decades, mosquitoes commonly have been
con-trolled by use of chemicals such as DDT. But research in California shows
that mosquitoes have developed a resistance to such chemicals, Singer said.
Singer said the chemicals also pose a threat because they
accumulate in the creatures that feed on the mosquito larvae, eventually
working their way up the food chain to man.
The research is being conducted with the assistance of the
World Health Organization and grants from the National Science Foundation and Western
Illinois's University Research Council.

Supercontinent Jigsaw
(The New York Times, 7/19/74) By Walter Sullivan
Drilling deep into the floor of the South Atlantic has
revealed a former continental area that, like legendary Atlantis, has sunk some
two miles beneath the sea.
The region is a fingerlike extension of the Falkland
Plateau surrounding the Falkland Islands off Argentina. According to Dr. Ian W.
D. Dalziel of Columbia University, the newly identified area provides the last
jigsaw fragment required to complete the fit for a joined Africa and South
America.
"It completes the puzzle," he said, in an
announcement by the university. It is widely believed that the two continents
were fitted together as part of a supercontinent called Gondwanaland before
their separation gave birth to the Atlantic Ocean.
Dr. Dalziel and Dr. Peter Barker of the University of Birmingham
were chief scientists on the recently completed 36th drilling leg of the
OCTOBER 1974 15
ship Glomar Challenger. The hole was drilled into the
eastward extension of the Falkland Plateau to see if it was, in fact,
continental, as would be required to complete the reconstruction of
Gondwanaland.
The evidence in the deepest sediment layers extracted
indicates that 150 million to 200 million years ago the area stood as dry land
in a climate like that of the Mediterranean.
As the continents separated, beginning 150 million years
ago, according to evidence obtained in the drilling, the area sank steadily,
reaching its present depth 80 million years ago. Such subsidence is thought to
occur as material deep in the earth cools and shrinks following rupture and
separation of the continents.

Dear Dan:
As the UFO representative for Buffalo Unit #37, I make a
report at each monthly meeting of the Unit on UFO sightings. You have no idea
of the immensity of the happenings! Some of the reports are 10 type-written
pages in length, and these are only the most interesting reports! I have
usually omitted the routine sightings.
Thought the Understanding readers would be interested in
the following:
About April 3rd, 1974, an Australian executive called
Herbert Moody, a prominent politician and business man in Victoria, Australia.
Previously, the executive had seen and photographed near his home a UFO, which
resembled half a sphere. On the April date he was driving along the highway at
night when his headlight beams suddenly went over to the side of the road. He
was tempted to turn with the lights, as most anyone would, but kept his head
and slammed on his brakes instead. Then he saw a UFO off the side of the road,
on the ground. He took a good look and sped away.
Two Air Force agencies investigated the incident and used
a book, printed in America which had 400 UFO pictures in it, and asked
the executive to pick out what he saw . . . which was a metallic looking half
sphere with a protrusion on the flat side. It was glowing, with a circle of
lights coming out of the top and rotating like a horseshoe, going around the
top with globs of light of every color . . . "It sparkled like mad."
The viewer had been about 60 feet from the UFO.
16 UNDERSTANDING
A frightening aspect of this case is this. On the previous
night another motorist, at the same spot, also had his light beams turned,
followed them and was killed.
I am indebted to Branch and Klimm of the Register (California)
for this report.

Anti-Black Magic
(ANTI-BLACK MAGIC by Michael J. Campione, 2202
New Albany, Cinnaminson, New Jersey 08077,$3.00)
The negativity of black magic is recorded by Michael
Campione as a here and now subtle force designed to keep humans in bondage to
ill-ness, dependency and subjugation; to lead them away from the Christian
promise of freedom, joy, health and happiness.
He has investigated and recorded information pertinent to
these threatening factors, which are abundant in our daily lives. We are
alerted to the disruptive motives of greed, profit and power and we find the
book an excellent aid in helping us to recognize these dealers in black magic.
The author enlists the total man, spiritual, mental and physical, as a
protective force to combat the negativity.
Mr. Campione maintains that the hope of Christianity
relies on the rejection of present counterfeit doctrines and concepts: the
return to the true teachings of Jesus. "Rules and Regulations of Human
Conduct" given to the apostles by Christ are presented as guideposts to aid
all travelers on the path of spiritual development.
Because physical cleansing is a prime requisite for
communication and attainment, the practice of over-eating and lack of proper
nutrition are condemned, as is the use of drugs, alcohol and nicotine. He
endorses the need for vitamins and food supplements, lists the benefits
attributed to their use, the problems resulting from their lack. Food from
natural sources is essential as is pure, clean, unfloridated water.
To those serious in their quest for the better life, the
guidelines in

"The purpose of this book is to make you aware that
you are a very important person, that you are entitled to seek out and enjoy
your own level of satisfaction, that you possess the information that leads to
peaceful living, and that all you need do is implement your knowledge.
"The road to happiness starts with self-knowledge.
"Those who live with thoughts alone live in a dream
world; thoughts without action are useless.
"No one person is greater in value and importance
(than another), and nothing is more important than our living in harmony.
"As you control your emotions, you raise your opinion
of yourself and gain the power to prevent people and situations from tampering
with your spirit.
"Those who ask strongly enough for what they want
have the power to obtain it.
"We are all uniquely different; only you can be
you."
These are some of the ideas in Discover the Real You.
It contains suggestions for gaining control of our thoughts and emotions, and
how to set goals for things we really want to achieve. It is definitely a
helpful and affirmative book.
